i,m so upset...tasha had her kittens on monday, my husband called me at work and i rushed home by the time i got home she had delivered two still born kittens( at least i think they were) she had the next two and i had to clear their faces and then i gave them to her, they seemed afully small and really didnt have much hair...i was worried about them so i put some hot water bottles wrapped in towels near them, any how they both lived until today...at 1:00 one of them died and then at about 4:30 the last one died..
i let tasha see that they were dead and then i promply cleaned up all the signs that there were ever kittens in there...is that what i should have done?
i'm making her an appointment for the vet tommorrow, will her milk just dry up or is there something i need to do? sorry this is so long, but i have one more question, the male i used belonged to the nurse at my vets office, they had used him as a stud in the past but then gave him to a freind, could my kittens have been so unhealthy because something was wrong with the male? this nurse was the one who told me to call her friend and set up breeding tasha with that male, but i have to wonder in hind site why she just gave away a beautiful stud male(the nurse and her boyfreind own a small cattery)
the vet said before that tasha was very healthy so i just dont know what went wrong with her babies
thanks

I hope you will get Tasha spayed at her appointment so neither of you have to go through such grief again. The kittens sounded like they were premature, and with premies, you really have to know what you are doing for them to even survive. Once Tasha gets spayed, her milk will dry up. Good job eliminating the smells of the kittens, it will help Tasha get over her confusion

Is there a different stud you could mate her to this time?

Was that her first litter?

Maiden Persians sometimes have trouble with their first litter. Do you have any pictures of her?

I am very sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine losing the whole litter. I am not a breeder, I work in rescue, so don't know what to expect with breeding purebred cats. But I would think that if you do want to breed her again you should at least wait for six months to allow her body to heal. And definitely have the vet advise if it is something that could happen again, so you don't go through such a tragedy again.

This just made me cry, condolences on the loss of those tiny lives!

Being as this was her first litter, my suggestion to you is to try again after a reasonable amount of time (it may not take long for her to return to a state of estrus - if you do breed her again, please wait until her body heals and she has regained her physical resources) unless the vet discovers a problem which cannot be resolved. Do you have access to a feline theriogenologist in your area? Ask your regular vet if he knows of one locally and if so, I would suggest you have the theriogenologist do an evaluation on your girl before you attempt to breed her again.

As to whether or not it was a problem with the stud, that is always a possibility ... but it is also possible that the problem could be with your girl. If you do decide to locate another stud, you might consider asking for a record of successful breedings - his owner, if she is worth her salt, will not mind providing you with the dates litters were produced as well as the number and disposition of the kittens in those litters.

Best of luck,

~gf~
