Hi
I am new to this forum...I joined today
I am into fishkeeping in a big way and post on the forums for that alot!
My one other love apart from my fish - better than my fish
are my cats!
I have a 4 year old ginger male called Scampy who I reared from a kitten - his mother unfortunately died of a hemmorage shortly after birth
I also have a 3 year old cat called Ebony who...has just had her first litter
I have to say that the birth did not go exactly how I expected...she was very bewildered by the whole process hence...insisted on being at my side the whole time she was in labour. Whereas most cats find their desired place of safety and security when leading up to the birth she however was very unsettled throughout.
The labour finally happened June 1st midnight and the whole of the next morning she was frantically pacing, panting and lying around so uncomfortable. She just wanted to be by my side wherever I was (even if I went to the loo she was there) She is a very affectionate cat and a house cat at that - some would say she is more human than cat
When I say she is a house cat some may think 'how did she get pregnant?' well...she occasionally gets let out in the garden and never tends to go anywhere, but that time she met Bill (a ginger tom across the road) and well....
She must have spent the two days (she was allowed out at night for an hour) with him lol!
Anyway...the final advanced labour started the morning of June 2nd and she - like I say was very unsettled. She would not settle in her box I had made for her and decided to go into her litter box
(whilst the first kitten was being born) I obviously had to move her back to her box as that was the best place. I put the box by me whilst I carried on with work on the PC. Alittle later the first kitten was born and the devastating news is...he/she was stillborn - this kitten was breech - I think it had been the result of being in the birth canal for too long.
20 minutes later (after leaving her to it in the quiet living room) kitten number 2 was born...he was adorable and fine I am so pleased to say!
She cleaned him up and ate the after-birth, as they do...and I stayed close by and observed...she was happy with that, as if she wanted me to be there...blinking her eyes at me and purring.
30 minutes later kitten number 3 was born...again...still-born
Like with the first still-born kitten I tried for 4-5 minutes to resussitate this kitten by using a syringe to clear any possible fluid blocking the airways and by holding the kittens firmly and swinging them as vets reccommend to release any fluid...all without success...this was very, very traumatic to say the very least!
I researched endlessly on the web during Ebonys pregnancy but nothing was to prepare me for losing those two precious kittens. She even had a scan at the vets the day before the birth and all looked fine...the kittens were all seen active and kicking and I was reassured that all was well.
6 weeks on I am so proud of Ebony - she is a wonderful mother to Lenny (which is what we have named this little one) She is so devoted to him, as we are too
Lenny has been wormed and Frontlined and is a good weight and he is now eating alittle solid - fresh fish for now...he is still feeding from Ebony atm.
He even used his litter tray - first time!
I was so amazed that at 5 weeks old he did that!
He is a dark grey with black stripes and those bright blue eyes are so gorgeous - it is a pity they change colour.
The one thing that puzzled me was whether he was male or female as I know it is hard to tell before kittens reach 6 weeks of age. My friend - who has had so much experience with hundreds of kittens during her time said he was a girl...the vet however says he is a boy.
I look at diagrams online that show the sexual organs of male and female cats but it is still so hard to tell, as his little bits are still so tiny
He has his first jabs in 3 weeks...I always have the full lot...flu...enteritus and lukemia.
I love all my cats so dearly and I would like to post some pics of them all but cannot see any option to do that on this forum
