I have put Racer on a holistic mixture that consists of different tinctures designed to support the immune system, flush out kidneys, destroy bacteria and support the blood flow and help strengthen the muscles. He is also getting Zinc, magnesium, MSM and Silicea as well as a special powder from China called Jiaogulan which will enable me to take him off Bute.

He gets creek soaks for 20 minutes twice a day, followed up by a good hot foot soak with Epsom Salts and GSE- He is spending most of his time lying down on the sand hill- but that's okay, he shouldn't have weight on his feet anyway. He spends the rest of the time standing on the hill of sand so that his front feet are not really supporting him, just his rear. No corrective shoes this time either. My mind is made up- it is holistic all the way-
Go holistic!

When Speck had founder/laminitis 2 years ago, the vet gave her Bute (sp) for inflamation, and wrapped her feet in epsom salts and betadine. He dumped maybe 1/2 cup epsom salts in a small baby diaper, poured on about 1 cup of betadine. Then you cover the foot with it, wrap with stetchy wrap, and cover with duct tape. The bandage lasts a day or two depending on how well you wrap them.

I don't know if this might help your Racer or not. Sounds like what you are doing with the Epsom salt soaks and river soaks is similar. She was overfed, so we cut her feed. And she is very old, about 30 y/o, so has different issues than Racer. But I know that our vet saved Speck's life!

Maybe you could add betadine to the epsom salts as an antiseptic? Best of luck to you and Racer!

My quarterhorse just had a nail taken out of her hoof this week, so we have the same epsom salt/betadine wrap on her hoof now that Speck had 2 years ago! She is healing well.

Oh, Mary Anne, I am so sorry.
My heart breaks for you and Racer. The fact that you spent last night with him tells me how serious he is. Prayers for his complete recovery, and your wisdom in making medical decisions for him!

MA, you and Ranger are in my prayers. I believe that God gave you Ranger because He knew that you would give him the best care possible.

Not to be nit picky but his name is Racer not Ranger- and thanks for the thoughts guys. He is a magnificent animal, the question I am wrestling with it at this time is it fair to ask him to live like this.
