Okay, I should know this right...

But I Just started feeding Sara Purina One weight control(which by the way.. is that an okay food, or should i feed her something better?)

On the bag it says:

Recommended daily feeding instructions-

Weight of Cat Amount to Feed - Amount to Feed
Weight Maintenance Weight Loss**
5 to 9 lbs. (2 to 4 kg) 1/2 to 2/3 cup* (53 to 70 g) 1/3 to ½ cup* (35 to 53 g)
10 to 14 lbs. (4 to 6 kg) 2/3 to 1 cup* (70 to 106 g) ½ to 3/4 cup* (53 to 80 g)

*Using a standard 8 oz./ 250 ml measuring cup, which contains approximately 106 g of Purina ONE.
**At least a 10% calorie reduction.

Does this mean 1/3-1/2 cup everytime I feed her or is that all she gets for the day??

I want her to lose weight, but still, 1/3 a cup doesnt seem like very much food for one day. I know they have small tummies, but that doesnt sound right. Or maybe it does... I dont know, that is why I am asking!

Help!

I'm not entirely positive, because my cat is a grazer but she gets (in a day) about 1/2 a cup. I just fill up the bowl when it is low, but the cup I use is small and I don't fill it up more than once a day so i think you can start with what the bag says for a day and then if the cat is starving, maybe adjust it.

I feed yasmine 1 cup of food a day...shes 12.5 lbs-very rarely does it get completely empty. If your unsure about it, call the vet and ask what he/she recommends. I also use the Purina ONE, the hair ball formula....i've seen a tremendous change in her hairballs since i started this....

I agree that 1/3 cup does not sound like very much, so you may not want to cut it to that low. But to answer your question..when it says Recommended daily feeding suggestions, unless it specifies otherwise, it means that is the total amount for the day.

In checking one of my food bags - Royal Canin Senior 26, it notes that the "optimal amount" may vary depending on the cat's activity level, temperment and environment, and they list their recommended amts. depending on if the cat is lean, optimal or overweight...it's a nice guide.

Fwiw, as a comparison, for a 4 to 7 lb. cat with this particular food, if overweight, they suggest 1/2 cup per day.

That's the exact stuff I gave to Billy. I gave him 1/3 cup of food three times a day. He lost weight TOO fast, and I had to start adding in regular food, too, so that he would loose wieght healthily.

That's how Billy was... lost it too fast, so I split his food 50/50, and that worked well.

Goodnight!
I have to get up for my first day of work EARLY tomorrow! See ya later, and I hope all goes well!

I feed Mischief 1/2 a cup in the morning, and if she has cleaned it, I will give her a second
at night. It used to be a whole bowl worth, but I was told I was over feeding her, so a call to the vet may be an alternate route. Good luck!

I have a 20 pounder boy 2 1/2 years old. His sister is only 10 pounds I just changed their food today, their old food they were not eating much of. They scarfed down this new stuff. I considered the weight control one but thought it might not taste as good. Kinda like how diet food to humans taste, not as good as the real thing. Maybe I will buy that kind next.

You could always buy a bag of the light food and mix it half and half with the food you already have. That way your cat could gradually get used to the taste of the light food. I did that with my cats. They are so set in their ways. They have always ate Purina One (either chicken flavored or Salmon/Tuna flavored). I have tried several times to switch them to a better food (Nutro, Felidae, Eagle Pack, Wellness). I would always start out mixing it half and half until I ran out of Purina One. They would hesitantly eat it (but at a much lesser amount than normal). Every time I would start feeding them 100% of the new food they would completely quit eating. I have come to the conclusion that they are addicted to Purina One! They are just so used to the size and shape of that food that they won't accept anything new. All four are healthy and have nice coats, so I guess Purina One can't be that bad. A few months ago I bought them a bag of Iams (because I had a $2.00 off coupon). Suprisingly they did eat it, but my all black cat (Sabrina) developed the worse case of dandruff I have ever seen in a cat! She started getting it a week or two after they started on the Iams. Needless to say I never bought a second bag. After just a week or two back on the Purina One her coat was dandruff free, soft and shiny again.
