Right now I've got one per cat. My boys always use their boxes, but the vet I go to feels there should be one per cat plus one extra. There is just no way that's going to happen in my little apartment. Plus, lets just say that my boys are about to be told, "she followed me home can I keep her?" So I'm wondering if I need to do some rearanging to find room for another box, or if 3 would still be OK as long as I scooped twice a day?

Mine have two. They use both for both pee and poop....
They tend to use the covered more often than the non-covered.
Your vet is right about the rule of thumb, but sometimes some cats will accept only two, but that is the least I would have for two cats.

With multiple cats, they obviously mark over one another incessantly and so go double or quadruple the amount of times only one cat would go.

I would tend to play it by ear when you bring the new one home.

But you will need to separate the new cat from your old ones anyway, and she would obviously have her own litterbox then too, so maybe you can incorporate 3 into your apartment.

I use half my hallway closet, and one is under a vanity I don't use in my bedroom.
I am going to move the second one to behind my couch though so there are places you can put it if you look hard

I don't have one in my bathroom cuz its too small.

I have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes. It works well in my household, although I had toyed with the idea of reducing it to one box because the hooded box sometimes only gets used once a day. For now, I'm going to keep 2 boxes.

3 cats, 2 boxes. I started with 4, one never got used, cut down to 3, one was used by only 1 cat, so took a chance and cut down to 2, and it's worked out well. I scoop twice a day and clean out once a week.

Three cats, two covered litterboxes in different room, scooped twice daily, no problems.

My 3 cats have two boxes and the 2 kittens have one.

My aunt used to have 3 cats and only one box! But there was never any problems. I think it's all about how often you clean the boxes

4 cats three boxes but one doesn't get used either. They are inside/outside so I know 3 of them use the great outdoors. Come fall I will be either moving one box under the laundry sink or just getting a new box for under the laundry tub as OX is aging and I that will save him some steps as the boxes are in the basement-he usually scratches at the door to go outside to poop-even in the dead of winter.

Right now I've got 3 cats, 3 boxes, but I'm concerned about what's going to happen after the introductions are done. They use one box more than the others, so I'm thinking I may have to be concerned more with that box than with adding another box, but I guess I'll see how it goes.

3 cats, 2 big boxed and one small - one in the hallway, one in another room and the small one in a corner in the living room. Doors are never closed. They seem to be content with that. They usually use one box for pee and one for poo, but alters between the boxes. If one cat pees in box1 the two others also pee there.

But I know the rule is one box per cat + one extra.

Festus and Garfield have 2 boxes they share. Foster Sugartoes and her kits are in a separate room, there is one full size litter box which Sugartoes uses, and another large litterbox with low sides that the kittens use. So 4 boxes for 5 cats.
