Well, I'm not as experienced as some here, but I can tell you what happened with my cat. Like you, I thought there was one more kitten inside. I felt a lump and it seemed a lot like a kitten. Also, the mother was panting too, just like yours. I could not be sure whether she was just post-labor or if she was still in labor.

I took the mother to the vet, and he said it was not a kitten, and that all was okay. I found out later that after birth, the uterus contracts tightly to stop the bleeding, and the tightness can sometimes feel like a kitten left behind.

It takes a vet to do a thorough palpation to know whether it's just the uterus contracting or if it's actually a kitten, so if you even suspect that there's a kitten in there, the best bet is to take the mom in to a vet to have it checked out. It is definitely dangerous to let a kitten remain inside the mother unborn.

Wow this just happened to me last night. In my case there was a kitten but she wasn't painting or anything I went to pet her and found a foot
I tried to help but it had been 30 hours since the last cat so it was stillborn
YOU MUST GET THIS CAT TO A VET !!! I DIDN'T BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SIGNS

PS this loss was very hard on my cat as she has had 2 die now (of 3) we are praying for her to pull through
