HELP!!! My cat just had her kittens and wouldn't clean off the kittens so I had to help. But I thought she would take them back after the birthing, that's what I've have read recentley...but I don't know what to do! It's late at night and the vet is asleep and don't have much gas to go get things...plus everything is closed.

So, if you could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!
(sitting here with kittens in lap)

P.S. this is her first litter

First off is she done having kittens? They generally don't pay attention to the litter until all the kittens are born. You need to keep these kittens warm- them on your lap open to air is not a good thing- see www.kitten-rescue.com on how to care for these wee ones-

How old is the momcat? Is this her first litter? She could just be stressed and if you shut her into a room and confined her with her kittens in a nice soft nest, she might settle down and take care of their needs-

I have the kittens wrapped in a towel and I'm keeping them close to me to keep them warm.

The momcat is probably a year and a half old. She doesn't seem stressed. She did move from the box we laid out for her to the couch. Just left her there, she won't go anywhere else. But I don't know if she will accept the kittens or not. If not, then what to do?

Is she completely disinterested, or just tuckered out? Maybe she'd not happy with the box - maybe it smells from the birth process, or it doesn't seem private or safe enough for her. Have the kittens nursed at all yet? They have to nurse in the first day. Try putting them up to her nipples and holding them there (wherever the mother currently is) to see if she lets them nurse or if she runs away or swats at them. If you confine her, as Hissy recommended, she may settle down with them. It took a bit for my mom-cat to settle into a regular, attentive mom. She was very disinterested for the first few hours after the birth, and seemed to mostly want to be with me, so I sat by her with them for the first few days. Now she's got the hang of it.
