Hi. I'm new here. I know I will probably be told to bring my cat inside, but my husband won't allow that. Never mind HE brought the cat home for me. My cat is a 1 year old male named Spanky. Solid black and very affectionate.

Anyway, my problem is that the neighbor's cat will come onto our porch and attack my cat. Talking to the neighbors does no good. How can I keep this other cat off my porch without doing anything to bother my Spanky?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Flossie and welcome to TCS.

I'm afraid that you already know what must be done but your husband has placed his demands above the health and well-being of Spanky ... can you not explain to him that if Spanky continues being attacked that the resultant vet bills may become unmanagable? What about the stress and pain it causes to Spanky to BE attacked every time he ventures out?

I know how it is living with a man who feels that cats belong outside. When I first married my husband (nearly 20 years ago now!) he was of the firm opinion that I should immediately turn my beautiful little Seal Point Siamese girl out and let her fend for herself. Of course, he ~never~ let on to this before we married, so it came as quite a shock to me to learn this was how he really felt. He told me in no uncertain terms that I must put her out before he returned from work that day.

Well, it came to quite a shock to him when he got home from work this one particular day and found my suitcases had been packed, my cat was already in her carrier and I had my car keys in my hand. I told him right then and there that I had no intention of putting my cat outside and that unless he was willing to change his views, I would be leaving immediately.

Needless to say, we are still together, my little girl lived to be 18 years old all the while an adored INSIDE ONLY pet - in fact, she took to cuddling in with him in the later stage of her life and the day I was forced to have her euthanized, he grieved her parting in a way I had never seen before.

Yep, I am another inside only advocate and here is why - the author of this article says it so much better than I can - and I admittedly grew up with "outdoor" cats who came and went as they pleased. They miraculously all lived extraordinarily long lives in spite of it but in retrospect , I know now we were just really lucky - and as spayed/neytered cats, they never strayed too much.

Here is the url. Hopefully, this will convince your husband.

I too would suggest you take a stand against your husband's control and tell him the cat belongs inside as long as the threat of attack is there. He must really love vet bill though- cat bites are nasty and expensive to treat.

Ok. You guys are breaking my heart! I read several of the articles you suggested, Cyber. Thanks for the info. We will (hopefully) be moving into a bigger house soon and perhaps Spanky will enjoy having more room to "prowl". And more space to stay out of my grumpy, but loveable, hubby's way.

Congratulations guys, I'm a convert now! (Converted to keeping my kitties inside only)

Did I mention I have another cat, Francine? She never goes out. We've always kept her inside. She climbed up a window screen last summer and because it was not attached properly, she fell out the window. It totally freaked her out to be out of the house! She couldn't get inside fast enough!!

That's a great story, you made my day! Good for you! THink of what this man would have missed if you hadn't educated him too.

Had you thought of getting an outdoor enclosur for Spanky?? and convince your husband to bring the cat inside., but the enclosur will portect the cat from other cats, at least. You can get them at Petsmart I think

Oh my dear ... he is ~far~ from being "educated" LOL But as he continues to display brief but shining moments of promise, I continue to let him hang around. *wink and grin* We are getting ready to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas - we leave within the upcoming week and don't ya just know - HE was the one who was grilling me over the instructions for the cat sitter! "Make CERTAIN they know to BACK OUT OF THE DOOR or else Lexus will bolt through their feet ... do they know about Lexus NEEDING to sleep in my bedroom during the day - make SURE they do NOT close that door off to her!!!" *smile*
