hi there im new as well, and my ole boy is on meds as well,i find it easier to wrap him in a towel, then smother the pill in cat food, open cats mouth (need extra pair of hands) pop pill as far down cats mouth and hold mouth shut, while stroking its throat,9/10 it works,if not pick pill up off floor and clean it up start again
good luck aslo a supply of bandaids helps

I smashed a pill up in her food one time...but normally i get down on my knees and put her between them..with her rear end towards me...and open her mouth and drop the pill down her throat while gently massaging her throat..that seems like the easier way to me. I'm such a whiny baby when i have to give her pills though...i hate it just as much as she does!~

Hi and welcome. I have a cat that is very stubborn and HATES anything that is not going her way so giving her meds is very interesting. I don't know how she can possibly do it but she gets the pill back up and spits it about 3 feet across the room. I have one of the pill guns and that is actually harder for me than with out. Has your vet shown you how to grab the sides of her jaws and open her mouth? Once you can get her mouth open far enough just put the pill in the back of mouth and it should go right down.

The other responses here have given you excellent advice, but I just wanted to add that it is a good idea to offer kitty some water after you've gotten the pill to go in. There have been reports of throat lesions and other issues with taking pills dry. I have a small syringe of water at the ready and give it immediately after I insert the pill.

Best of luck,

I agree either would work well - someone once mentioned to me that they use "squirt cheese" (I think it is a Kraft product called "Ready Cheese") and that works really well. I know another friend with a cat who adores cream cheese so she gets a dollop of that and gives it after the pill.

My Siamese has also remarkable agility in spitting up a pill. Once she has spit it up, she looks at me with a self satisfied smirk as if to make me realize how ill equipped I am to even medicate my own baby!! (It seems that way anyway). I too hold her with her bck to me and put the pill down her throat, closing her mouth and stroking her throat to make sure it goes down. I also give her a syringe of water and a treat - thinking she mighjt associate a treat with a pill but thus far, even tho she is utterly brilliant most of the time, this association seems to allude her.

I usually win most of the time now so I am getting better but having boasted that, I am destined to find the next pill clear across the room, lol

Depending on the kind of pill, they can be very bitter. Wrapping it in something, such as cheese or bread, or buying empty pill capsules (available at some pharmacies) can be very helpful to keep the cat from tasting the pill. I second gayef's comment about following it with water to make sure it goes down all the way to the stomach. With my cats, I usually give them some wet food or other tasty treat.
