Mother nature takes care of the overpopulation with bubonic plague. Mother nature is a harsh mistress when left to her own devices.

With cats it's real easy. Keep them inside. Dogs are harder since they don't have the litterbox option and also usually must be walked. Treat all pets with vet-prescribed flea medication and keep a close eye out for any fleas. Realize that when there are prairie dogs in the area, there will be bubonic plague occassionally. It is part of their population cycle.
Heidi,

Fascinating. Thanks for the informative post.

Tony Hillerman wrote a great mystery novel "The First Eagle" which he sets around this problem on Navajo land. I didn't have any idea about this occurance of the disease until I read the book. It's really a great read.

That's how I became aware of the problem, too!

I know that they can treat plague now, but it's still pretty creepy to think about outbreaks!
There is a couple companies that come out here and litterally vaccuum up prarie dogs from their holes so they can sell the little pests for up to $700 in Japan!

So true! That's the way it goes down here.

But...I was sort of surprised at how surprised people were that there was plague here. I guess we just get used to the things that happen around us and don't think they're unusual. It just sort of breaks out every year, right around the western suburbs of Denver. (Lots of rattlesnakes here too!
)

But it's the Black Death! Haha. Ok, when you live in Indiana and you hear about plague outbreaks in Colorado, all you can think about is giant, nasty boils and horrid deaths. When I was in Colorado there was an outbreak of some disease spread by mice doo. I can't remember the name of it. We do get rattlesnakes in Indiana, so that doesn't suprise me

"the California ground squirrel and its fleas are the most common source" uhh...California? Hmm..I thought we were safe from everything out here. We DO have squirrels. I hope they don't spread it. Wow... I learned a lot...I didn;t think it is existed. Wow, it has really lasted a while.
