Atheism and Evolutionism? ?

Thread Starter
Are these one and the same?

If you are one can you please explain to me what you believe in? I have tried to find the answer on google, ect but can't come up with anything solid.

The sole reason for starting this thread is that I am curious, not for it to turn into a religion debate.

NO, they are not the same, IMO. Atheism means a person doesn't believe in any type of god or higher power. Evolution is the theory that life on earth goes through subtle changes over long periods of time, the end result can be something completely different from the beginning.

I believein God, but I also believe in evolution. Both require the ability to see something that might be based on the evidence around you.

Ash, I wouldn't say conclusively that there is linkage between the two camps.

Let's use an analogy of men, women, and cats, with men and women representing atheism and christianity (not necessarily in that order), and cats representing evolution.

With these values placed on the factors of the equation, you can readily see that simply because some (or all) men like cats in no way indicates that some (or all) women do NOT like cats.

You can run with the permutations, both plus, minus and neutral, of the above factors and see that there are quite a few variations possible, but linkage, ?

Nope, 'fraid not.

It's rather an either/or -- and/or -- and/and type of thing.

Well said Bren. There are many of us who believe in God, but also believe in the undeniable evidence supporting evolution.

Atheism is the believe in no "god" or creator, I am one for instance. You can not be an Atheist and a christian, or muslim ect... Evolution is the believe how the earth evolved. I believe in this also. You can be an christian, ect and believe in evolution.

Atheism is a type of religion, or anti-religion if you prefer. Evolution is a theory in science that does not address the existence or non-existence of god or gods. They are two different things entirely. As others have said, you can be of whatever religious persuasion you want, and still think that evolution leading to new species is a solid theory (or not). They are independent of one another.

I think the confusion arises because some religious fundamentalists (people who take everything that has been said or written in holy books over thousands of years literally, word for word) accuse those who believe in the theory of evolution of being atheists, because a belief in evolution is not compatible with a belief that God created the world in 7 days. But the vast majority of Christians, Muslims and Jews (who all share the Old Testament as the basis for belief) would now accept that the creation story is a myth, a parable, with a lot of symbolism to explain man's dependance on an outside Creator.

Religious scientists of all persuasions believe in evolution, though there are still many gaps in our knowledge and the theory is being modified and expanded all the time. I think most people don't understand what evolution really means - it is just nature, over millions of years, doing what cat breeders do all the time - selecting genes for characteristics which are desirable in the light of particular needs and circumstances.

When some of you say you believe in god - does that mean you like to use the idea of a god and his ways as ideals to live by - or do you really believe in a allmighty being? If so, why?

I'm not trying to be silly or rude, I'm just curious

Count me in this camp, too. I have heard interpretations where evolution was going on - ie, there were people on the planet when God stepped in with Adam and Eve. Not that I am a big Bible reader, but I think there is a reference in Genesis that talks about Adam's sons (the sons of God) and the 'daughters of man'. Something like that. Don't quote me......
