Hi. Lately when giving my cat a bath he's been bleeding. I heard that dander can cause this, but the blood is excessive. I've looked him over but I don't see anything unusual. Does anyone know why he would be doing this?

There is no way we tell from this side of the screen. and if you can't tell us where it's coming from, we sure can't tell you! We also don't know what you mean by excessive. A vet with a hands on exam, should be able to tell you what's going on.

The only time I've seen cat's "bleed" while being bathed is when they were loaded with fleas. It's the flea poop that turns bloody looking when wet.

Also depends on what you are bathing him in. Many over the counter products are harmful for your cat and can cause problems besides just bleeding-

CTCat, I think you're probably right about the flea doo-doo. He has a lot of fleas! He's an indoor cat, but has sneaked out of the house several times and I think the flea problem has intensified. I've given him several baths but I'll probably need to take him to get a flea dip. Thanks.

If he has fleas, he needs a vet. He has tapeworms and could also be anemic if he has that many fleas. Please get him in to be safely flea treated by your vet and check his bloodwork to be sure he isn't anemic and check his stool for worms

Great points Hissy, if this is from fleas, I'd be very worried about anemia

As you have discovered, flea shampoos don't really work. The vet can give him Frontline or a similar flea treatment that will work, as well as checking him for worms.

Well my baby boy passed away today. I took him to the vet and and she said that he was dehyrated and anemic. He was given several tests to see if he had leukemia or kidney failure and they both came back negative. The kitty was going to stay in the hospital to see if his RBCs could get back up to normal (they were at 10 and should be between 25-35) and to get hydrated again. She left the office for a little while and when she came back he had passed away. I feel guilty for not having taken him in sooner. I thought he was okay, but several days ago I noticed that he hadn't been eating and that he wasn't being his usual self. I miss him so much. Thank you all for giving me advice on what to do.

Can you shed any light on this for us? For future references? Did you bathe your kitten in something over the counter that you bought? I am sorry this cat lost the battle for his life-

I'm so very sorry
When cats stop eating this is a major danger sign. Better to be safe than sorry and get your kitty to the vet sooner than later. I'm sure you know that now. Take care.

Hissy, the shampoo that I used was over-the-counter. What really got my attention was the amount of orange/red water (maybe blood) that would come off of him when I would bathe him. I don't think it was the shampoo that caused it, though. My vet said that he might've gotten an infection through swallowing a flea since he had so many or he might have leukemia in his bones since other tests ruled out leukemia elsewhere. All I have to say is pay special attention to the actions of your cats. I feel he would still be here if I had done something sooner. It's amazing how guilt can overwhelm you.

Don't keep beating up on yourself. The poor little one might have died anyway no matter when you took him to the vet. Feline leukemia is a hateful and devastating disease. I'm sorry your vet didn't do an autopsy to find out what was the matter because if you have other kittys they can be infected with leukemia too! There are vacines. Best of luck. Sorry for your loss.

My cat has done this since she had a UTI in june of this year i too have looked her over and there are no places i see that could cause the amount of blood. She does not have fleas.

This is a 10yr old post. I doubt that even the original poster is even around. I am surprised this thread wasn't locked. @MServant
