How can you tell if a cat is pregnant or not? I went in the backyard and picked a cat up and her nipples were poking out and looked swollen.. her sides are sunk in and she doesn't have very much weight.

Anyway to take her to a vet? That will be the best way to determine if she is pregnant.

Can they tell by just looking at her? I have been volunteering at a vets office.. so Im sure I can take her in there and see if they can just tell by looking.. I can't afford to pay for the pregnancy test though.

They would be able to give you a better idea then we probably could because the vet is used to looking for certain things.

She may have a litter of kittens already. I wouldn't keep her away too long if that is the case. maybe follow her & take all to the vet.

The vet said she is probably pregnant.. and that she will spay her. If I go ahead and let her have the kittens.. could she be spayed while the babies are still nursing? Or would that dry her milk up and they would have to be bottle fed?

If you let her have the kittens she will have to wait until they are weaned to be spayed (8 weeks). If she looks like her sides are sunk in and she is skinny, she is not in very good shape to nourish a litter of babies. As sad as it is, I would suggest going ahead and having the vet spay her now.

Wanting to foster a litter is a great idea, but if you are working at a vets office I'm sure another cat who is too far along to spay will show up soon, and you could offer to foster her. Or call a foster agency to see if they need help. The agency I work with pays for vet care until the animals are adopted, which is a great help!

How nice of you to take this cat in and care for her!

I would second the suggestion to have her spayed....she doesn't sound like she is in very good shape and since you don't know who she mated with...there is the chance for distemper, FIV and FELV and fading kitten syndrome. If you want to foster a pregnant or nursing mother..contact your local shelter.

Did you take her in for an exam? From the description you gave, it sounds to me that she has already delivered and may still be nursing.

I must agree with cookandcompany - try to follow her and see if you can find her nest, then get all in to see your vet or contact your local no-kill shelter or rescue and see if you can foster them if they will assist you in finding homes for them.
