Did Cruise really set this up?

I need a diversion from London:

there are rumors that no only is his relationship with katie holmes a publicity stunt, but that he interviewed young actresses for the "role" and did this to get back in good with younger audiences.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...sn=001&sc=1000

She "disappeared" for two weeks and then emerges as his girl friend.
What do you think? I woulnd't put it past him. I mean he is acting so weird.
I've read all of that before and I totally find it odd and suspicious. Especially the part where she disappeared and came back his girlfriend. I'm sorry, that's great that he's in love but I don't know many people (if anyone) that would act THAT head over heels in love and propose after 2 months of dating. And her accepting, after dating/being engaged to Chris Klein for ages? It seems fishy...

Yeah plus they both keep using the term "amazing" about the other one. And they kiss so fake, it all seems set up to me.
Well, whenever they kiss, they're always looking into the camera... ever notice that? Like they know they're putting on a show...

I could care less about his personal life. What I'm ticked about is that I spent 8 bucks on War of the Worlds. It stunk.

Did it? It's getting mixed reviews, Ebert gave it thumbs down which surprised me.

No plot. Running, hiding, destruction. And a weak ending.
And not to turn this back to this morning's events in London, Marge, but ever since 9/11, I am just not a fan of gratutious, large-scale destruction in films.
I really don't find that site relible at all. So my guess that all the rumors are false
post #10 of 49
That article is hilarious! I seriously doubt there's some vast conspiracy going on here though. They probably just have the hots for each other. I feel bad for her parents! I still want to see War of the Worlds, despite Cruise's apparent lunacy.

Makes a lot of sense. Ol' Tom's always seemed a bit of a fruit loop to me.

To me, the ending was really lame. I can not believe that Boston was virtually untouched throughout the distruction....didn't those people look like they were attending a cocktail party?

I won't even get into how even though he had the only working car, there always was a seemingly perfect path for Tom and his van to weed through...LOL

Also, his scenes with the son were unrealistic IMO

Regarding this, I think he is a strange man, who happens to be looking for publicity.

I actually found that lots of fun to read. Especially taking into consideration everything else that's happening.

The salon.com series that is linked to from that article is very enlightening. I recommend it. You have to sign up for a free day pass if you aren't already a member, but it's worth it!

Long ago, it was the mega studios that set up actors and actresses to wed. The girl and the guy had no say in the matter and many weddings were staged prior to big production movies being released. So really how is this different? He and she did this to help their movie career, the only thing is they are so over the top that the movie they should be promoting, should be The Titanic! War of the Worlds stunk big time. No plot, the action was larger than life and unbelievable as was his role in the whole movie- from lukewarm dad to superhero. The aliens were boring and I guess I was expecting more than I got.

I had to laugh, while I was in the grocery store last week, we were standing in line and tom and girlie were featured all over the mags. The woman in front of me, took a look at all the false smiles being sported and said "Look, they have matching teeth!" LOL

But that was a different era, that was before Sandra Day Oconnor and women having jobs and lives of their own! I think this is so sad and creepy.

Eh I think people in Hollyweird, especially those who've been there ions and ions (such as Mr. Cruise) have a different state of mind. Nothing is "real" anymore to them.

I didn't see War of the Worlds... gonna wait til it hits the video store & rent it.

IMO, Tom has done nothing but damage his image (especially, for me, the remarks he aimed at Brooke Shields re: postpartum depression). Plus, he was RUDE to my sweet, precious Matt Lauer on the Today show and you shouldn't be allowed to cross sweet Matt and get away with it!

I saw that whole interview- "Cruise- Man on a Mission" where he speaks out on clinical depression... It made me want to reach through the TV and strangle him. He was acting like he knew everything there is to know about psychiatry and anti-depressants. Not only were the things he said untrue, they were dangerous. I have a feeling he is a "Man out of Medication" and he should probably be hospitalised for awhile to stabilize. He is acting like a manic depressive on an upswing and I am sure he will go downhill soon.
I was suprised to read about just how anti- psychiatric medicine and treatment the scientologists are. L. Ron Hubbard hated psychiatry! He made it his life's mission to totally stop the field. Scientologists are pushing legislation all over the US to limit access to psychiatric care, particularly for children. It's pretty disturbing. The whole scenerio with Shields made a lot more sense to me after I read about the scientologist views on mental health treatment.

My stepdad commented that the grandfather could have at least given the son some of his clothes. What are the chances that they would all be home at just that time....

One word: Scientology. I don't even remotely consider it a "religion" barely a cult. According to his beliefs, there's nothing wrong with him (even though I agree he seems abit manic), but there's something very wrong with anyone who even considers psychotherapy or medication. What a crock.

Does anyone else find it even the slightest bit wierd that Katie's childhood dream was to marry Tom Cruise??? and now she's doing it?

Yeah, I thought that was really strange. I mean, sure it would be cool from her perspective for a while, but... She was a CHILD worshiping his POSTER on her wall! I just also think that those childhood/preteen/teenage fantasies about whatever star you're "in love with" can't possibly come true. No one is as good as what we made up in our heads, and it would have to be a big disappointment to really know the faults of your dream.

BTW, we saw War of the Worlds today, and unless you're a big HG Wells fan (Earl is, and he liked the movie) and really want to see the book on film...skip it. Don't bother giving him your money. It was lame, especially that last scene. Yeah, apparently they were having tea in Boston.

I'm really curious about this tea in Boston thing? What is that?
(you can tell me I don't think i will be seeing this movie)

Katie seems like she is along for the publicity ride... I have never really been impressed with her acting, she's not bad, just not that special either. Tom probably seemed like a dream come true - its her ticket to A-list celebrity status.

I'm not sure if the whole thing is a set-up or not. I'm sure it is from his end, but I think Katie might actually think she loves him. Who cares, it will all be over in probably less than a year.

Definitely. Seems like, regardless of how he really feels about her, she's so caught up in this childhood dream and this huge celebrity that is Tom Cruise...

Granted, I don't think she's all innocent and clueless and I think those "Free Katie" tshirts are a bit silly as she has to know, at least on some level, what she's doing. You know?

Well, Marge, after 2 solid hours of rampant, complete destruction by these aliens (which is going on worldwide, if you listen carefully to the news casts at the beginning of the film), Tom Cruise - hero dad - gets to Boston, where his ex-wife and new hubby are with her parents. Well, they step out the front door looking like they were playing bridge and drinking tea, with their entire street completely unscathed. Almost laughable, if you hadn't just flushed 8 bucks of your hard-earned cash down the toilet.

Now, I will say that I think Cruise is a good actor. He played the role he was given very well. Perhaps it is because he has beaucoup experience playing a similar role, but he has the ability to summon the raw emotion needed.

The person I am ticked off at for this film is Steven Spielberg. ::censor::censor::censor:: I expect way more from a film with his name on it. Come on.....Jaws, ET, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, etc. etc., and this piece of trash?????

Also the aliens were lame- I mean come on! They looked circa 1950 aliens, not modern bad guy smash em up aliens that they could have been. I think of Predator, and Aliens, and I looked at these guys and fell asleep! Mike woke me up at the end and said it was time to go home, so I missed the ending of this blockbuster- thanks for the recap Deb. I think I am glad I fell asleep.
