It's best to get normally developed household cats neutered once they are two months old and weigh at least 2 lbs.

As part of a rescue class I took I saw video of younger kittens getting nuetered, both males and females. I cannot describe how easy this vet (who is well known in this area for doing young kittens and does a ton of ferals) made it seem. I will never be afraid of nuetering a kitten again.

We didn't watch the older female get nuetered however because we were warned it would be a little bloodier and none of the others wanted to see it.

I used to believe they should be over 6 months. But Garfield was neutered by age 3 months, and never had a minutes problem with it. He has also never sprayed anything. He is 16 months old now.

Festus was spayed at 6 months, but she snuck out at 5 months. I so did not want an oops litter!

Getting them done younger is safe, I have read studies. And it guarantees you won't have an accidental litter. Read the pregnant cat forum or the Bridge postings to learn why a litter isn't a good idea! I'm glad you are already planning to do the right thing with your cat!

All 6 of ours were spayed/neutered at 2 pounds, or 4 months, whichever came first.

I had both of mine neutered at 6 months because vet wouldn't neuter them prior to that. You definetly don't want to wait longer than that because they might start spraying.

As far as i know my vet wont spay before 6 months, it isnt really heard of in the UK. When i was researching mammary cancer, i found a study that said that if you spay a female before she comes into her first heat, she is 200 times less likely to get mammary cancer, so if i ever get a young cat, i will check it out with the vet.

Our Hobbes had to get neutered at 4mos because he was VERY well developed at an early age (let's just say...the vet didn't have to charge for "them" not descending fully...lol), whereas Sunny got spayed at 6mos. Depends both on the cat and the vet. Some vets won't do it at certain young ages, but I've had some (like Hobbes' vet) that were totally ok with doing it then. If your guy is fully developed, I would take him in, but you could also call your vet and ask...or ask when he goes in for vaccinations for them to check to see how well he's developed. It's always better to catch them before they start spraying...they might not stop even after getting neutered if they've already sprayed.

I say call & ask, or ask them to check when he's already there...and take things from there.

Sorry...didn't realize you'd already gotten this question answered. I might suggest checkign with other vets, though. You REALLY don't want him to start spraying (like our Hobbes did at 4mos old), because he might not stop even after you get him neutered. I would REALLY recommend you looking into another place, even if you only use them for this, and get him neutered as soon as he's 4mos old.

Under a stack of blueberry waffles.
I called my usual vet a few month back and asked this same question...he said that he wouldnt spay till 6 months and wouldnt neuter until 8. Having 3 kittes (a pair of males and a female), this was out of the question. i was NOT chasing a pair of fighting, pissing tomcats around my house with a spray bottle of vinegar.

So i shopped around. All 3 of them are scheduled to be fixed at a different vet the day they turn 5 months. A tad higher in monetary cost than the other vet, but well worth it in all other aspects, i think.

I have NO IDEA why a vet would try to make you wait until 8 months of age to neuter a cat.

8 months is horrible! I have my cats done at 10 weeks and I have never had a problem. Vets need to get up to date with the times there, it is such a quick easy procedure and there is no reason to wait that long to do it.

iam in total agreement of 6 mos it just seems to young before then to have a animal done, but you do want it done since male cat urine is nasty and hard to get out of everything, and its awful.

Why does it seem too young to have your cat neutered at two months?
