Hello Everyone. My cat had kittens in May and we kept all the kittens and the cat in our basement at night. During the day the mom cat is up with us and walking around. But just at night we would put her in the basement with her kittens. Well its been a week since her kittens are no longer with her and now that is a week where me and my husband have had no sleep. Our bedroom door is closed and the door to the basement is closed, but we still hear her all night meowing. My husband is getting sick of it. When my cat was pregant she was kept in the basement at nights. So its nothing new. But I tried to let her come upstairs during the night but she only walks in the room and starts meowing. Its not a soft meow its a loud and long one. I am not sure if it has something to do with having her kittens gone. Because she will walk around the basement meowing like she is trying to find them. Please help we are losing sleep. Thanks

So getting her spayed will fix stop all the meowing all night and now during the day. I wasn't sure it it would be that or if she was going through a seperation stage from her kittens.

You shut her alone in the basement just after you took away her kittens? Where have the kittens gone, did you sell them all at once? How old were the kittens when they left mom? How many times do you intend to breed from your cat? Did the mom have a vet check-up before & after giving birth? To properly bring up kittens they should be in a regular home so they can get used to household smells & noise. Also they have to learn what they cannot scratch (carpets, walls etc).

I think it is probably a case of shutting the barn door when the horse is already out now, Mr. Potato Head ... I am pretty sure these kittens are all in some fashion gone now, so while I appreciate and agree with your concerns, I think it is all sort of immaterial now. Why not let's concentrate our focus on helping Kitty_Luke take care of this little girl's future?

My best to you,

~gf~

I concur with gaye- your mama cat sounds as tho she is esterus yet again (and it can happen very quickly) Poor mama!! I hope you have her spayed - for her sake and not yours. She is genuinely suffering both as she is in heat and she is missing her babies. I do hope you at least waited the proper 12 weeks before adopting the kittens! (and found good homes with a contract et al - as per the difference between a reputable cat breeder and a byb). But it is Mama you need to help now. She will have a happier, healthier life if you spay here asap!

I did not shut her in the basement, she has everything down there and thats where she sleeps, thats her home. It is a finished basement and we just close a door at night. My cat (Callie) is not a purebreed. She was a stray so I took her in under my wing last year. The Kittens were 10 weeks old. There were 5 of them left the mom at once. We didn't sell them, family members tooks the kitttens. I do not intend on breeding my cat again. And the whole time the kittens were here there were not in the basement they were around the house and they went expolring outside. By 7 weeks old they were climbing up the stairs. But I am not a mean person to my cat, I love her. And I didn't lock her away. I just wanted to get some help b/c this is the first time I have personally owned my own cat. I figured she was doing this b/c she was in heat but it all started the day the kittens were gone. So I wanted to know if mom cats go through a seperation perios or not.

I am not a breeder tho we did once take in a stray who turned out to be pregnant and when we went thru the process of finding proper homes for her babies (she only had three thankfully), she was very upset after they left -we kept one baby so she was not too lonely but still meowed for quite some time as she searched for them. We waited the proper period of 12 weeks (tho one left at 15 weeks) to give the kittens a good start in life (well socialized, learned all they could from mom). I felt so sorry for her - she missed those babies. At the same time, I think at 12 weeks, she was ready to become nice laid back kitty with no more babies!!

I have nothing constructive to add, other than saying that "Planned Pethood" is a great name for a spay/neuter clinic!

I'd get her fixed. I'm willing to be that's her problem.

Yes, some momcats will go through separation anxiety when their kittens leave. Also, since they don't understand leaving versus death- the period can become one of mourning and a heat cycle will start. Thank you for considering getting her spayed, and you do not sound like someone who does not care for her cat's welfare-
