Barely the start of hurricane season, and look here... National Hurricane Center .

My sister's beach house (I keep talking about it in all these wedding threads
) got badly torn up by Ivan... and here comes Dennis, taking aim at us again. My sister lives in Pensacola, and we live in the Western panhandle, so depending on what Dennis does once in the gulf, he could have either of us. I'm kinda scared for what this year is shaping up to... this area's about due, we've not been affected for years (apparently, I've only lived here for 3 years).

A direct hit could mean we'd have to move into our office-building-decided-shelter, with 10 birds and two cats... especially worrisome for Dennis because Holly just got spayed today and she's not in any mood to be hauled across town. The homesite isn't prepared... a bunch of oak trees in the front yard, no generator, no window AC to plug into one. We passed on the hurricane supply tax break because at the same time I was having major, expensive dental work and didn't want to shell out that much at once.

Any other Floridians especially nervous this year??

Nope, I'm not really nervous at all. Reason being: Last year was the first year in my 22 years of life here in Florida that any hurricane has ever hit the area I live in. Obviously, if there's one projected toward your home in the next week it makes sense to be concerned, I just don't get worried about it until that happens. IMO, mother nature does what she does for a reason, nothing personal to us, and the only thing I can do is prepare myself if the event actually happens. In all of the three hurricanes I went through last year I went to my parent's place for two of them and stayed at my apartment for the last. No boarded windows or anything, but of course plenty of water, candles, and flashlights "just in case." Last year (and probably this year) was much worse than a "typical" hurricane season, and I only hope that people don't really think that Florida is always hammered with them.

Anyway, best of luck to you with Dennis and I sincerely hope that it makes a turn and stays far away from you and your babies! Stay safe and just remember that all that matters is having air in your lungs and those of your loved ones.

Last year it made me, well, excited... we didn't get much but a couple of days off work all because a bit of a thunderstorm came through
. This year, being a homeowner for the first time, I'm getting really nervous!

No idea about Daytona... I'm too far North... but they're on the Atlantic side so they'll be pretty well safe from this one unless it makes a drastic turn.

Susie, I'm from Ormond Beach which is literally directly north of Daytona (went to high school in Daytona and my dad's business is in Daytona if that gives any perspective) and I can gaurantee you that it has been beautiful there this week. They're probably frying and having a blast.
Like I said before, the only hurricanes to hit Daytona in the past 22 years were the ones last year. They're absolutely fine!

You know what really bothers me though? The sensationalism and flat out LYING of some news reports. Of course they LOVE to blow everything up as being a huge deal. That's nothing new, the media loves to get everyone freaked out. It bothers me though because people outside of Florida often get the impression taht we're constantly hiding from hurricanes. That's just so frustrating to me. We aren't any more concerned about them than people in California are concerned about earthquakes, or those in tornado alley are concerned about tornados, or anyone anywhere else is concerned about whatever kind of severe weather they have to undertake. But what's even worse is when they lie. Last year the Weather Channel just flat out lied about locations they were in, claiming they were places that they weren't. They did that on a broadcast in Cocoa Beach, which they could get away with because Cocoa is small and not too many across the country would know the difference. It's disgusting how the media plays these things up. Anyway, I'm done with my media rant!

I know up here Pittsburgh had some pretty bad floods after Ivan came through. The sad thing is people in flordia who were untouch by the storms got Federal disaster relief, while people in the Pittsburgh Area who's homes were damaged got nothing. Hopfully Disaster Relief people will dothier job this year, hopfully they won't need to!!

I'm in central Georgia so by the time hurricanes reach here they are downgraded to tropical storms. Because I'm granted the luxury of getting the wicked weather (which I love) without 99% of the damage, I get very excited when hearing of hurricanes heading my way..although I keep in mind all those who fear it and my heart goes out to them.

Unfortunately, my basement bedroom floor started flooding recently so I think twice about getting all giddy now

Goodbye Cindy, hello Dennis
