Hi guys!

I have a huge male cat that lies on his back a LOT. Should I be worried?

He didn't start doing it until a few months ago, some time after he got neutered, so I thought at first it was just to avoid pain down there.

But he's still doing it. He sleeps like that. He plays like that. I wouldn't worry about it except that he hardly ever sits in that normal Rolls Royce fender pose anymore, like our other cats.

Should I be worried about bladder infections or something? Or is it just that we always rub his tummy when we see him doing it, and he wants attention?

Thanks,

Heather

He's learnt that is he lays like that he gets attention. I have taught my cat the same thing, if I see a her fluffy tummy, she gets a big tickle-tummy.

Some cats like to sleep on their backs, others don't. Dushka and Persil both do, Ellie never does. I think it is really funny to see them like that all stretched out with their paws in the air.

Rosie and Sophie lie on their back from time to time and i find it's when they seem happy and content?!, because when Rosie lies on her back she'll wash one paw, then switch over and wash the other paw etc..., but Sophie just lies when she's relaxed like below.

Bakker is always laying on his back. He is the first cat that I've had that likes it so much.

Trouble and Spaz both lie on their backs, the other four don't.
With Spaz we call it 'Human Trap', she's being cute, hoping to lull you into tickling her tummy so she can attack you.
With Trouble, we swear he's posing for Playcat magazine

Probably he did start doing it 'cause he was a little sore and then found that it was a position greatly to his liking. All our cats do it to varying degrees, and I've noticed that larger cats like my Ace (who IS going on a diet as soon as we find these kittens good homes) tend to like to sleep that way.

Maybe it's 'cause they're so wide that they can't roll over? Willow is a bigger cat (size-wise, anyway, she's still skinny) and does the back-rest more often than Buffy, who's smaller and skinny as a stick. Buffy's really narrow and slender and every time I picture her on her back, I always see her rolling over because her back just isn't wide enough, lol

Out of all eight of my babies Titden and chucky are the only two that rarely sleep on there back, most times they are just turning over and stop for a sec then go back on their sides. The rest of them on occation will except Buddy and Ive they are on their back more then any other way.

It could be that he did it originally to keep pain to a minimum, but has since enjoyed sleeping/playing that way. Our guy Hobbes didn't really do that until after he was neutered, either, and has since LOVED to have his tummy rubbed, too. Also remember it's a hot season, and they cool off that way. Hobbes can be spied CONSTANTLY laying that way anymore. No worries!!
