At my work I have seen two cats that a very thin and will not come near me so I am trying to feed them and save up some money to TNR. I placed some food down yesterday and today I saw flies and magoots(sp) in the food. Does this happen to everyone else, is there anything I can try to do about it?

Thanks Rachel

Common in warm weather i'm afraid. The flies are attracted by the smell. Other than only putting food down when there are cats nearby to eat it and taking it up when they are finished (not ideal in the situation) i dont know what to suggest.

Keep up the good work! To avoid lots of flies, why not try a good quality dry cat food that you can put down? I don't think that flies are so attracted to this as they can't lay their eggs in it. This might help.

I agree. I've never had a problem with flies in dry food and certainly have had no maggots.

Bravo to you for caring for these two cats!
(Have you checked into low cost spay-neuter clinics in your area or to see whether Philly has a TNR program in place?)

Rachel....other than feeding them dry food...you may want to make a feeding station. Many people have used rubbermaid containers with a hole cut in one end. That way, if it rains..the food won't get wet. Here is a list of TNR groups in PA:
