I let lily and lace play in the living room today with the others around, under supervision...because..well everyone came in and said hello and everthing last night. (they kept opening the bedroom door) Anyways..Lily got into the other kittens kitten chow, which I plan on switching them over to anyways. but..now that she has had the pro plan..she wont touch the Iams/royal canin she is used to eating. I know she hasnt been here long, but after she ate a bit of pro plan i took up the dish..and made sure her dish was there for her. Been a few hours and shes crying and howling for the pro plan dish
now what?

I know many members will disagree, but I don't think you have to be overly cautious about switching to a new food. Some cats react with stomach problems, but a great many don't, especially if the foods are similar in quality. If she doesn't get diarrhea, she'll probably be okay. Jamie and ZsaZsa constantly switch foods, with no trouble whatsoever, and the shelter cats get Royal Canin plus whatever other (many different canned and dry) brands are donated, and very, very few have reacted with upset tummies.

I wouldn't actually recommend it, but I wouldn't immediately tell anybody that they're endangering their cat's health, either. I've experienced that on other boards. Cats that hunt, either indoors or outdoors, eat a great variety of prey. We've had something called "pigeon-tailed butterflies", which are native to Italy and actually look like humming birds, in our area for the past three years (climate change!), and the cats love to catch and eat them. These things obviously aren't traditional prey in these climes, but I haven't noticed that the cats have suffered adverse effects from eating them. I sometimes suspect that pet food producers claim that switching foods is a bad idea just to promote brand loyalty.
Jamie, and now ZsaZsa, insist on variety, and I'm careful about the ingredients in the foods I buy due to Jamie's allergies/EGC, but it doesn't seem to make any difference if I periodically replace Felidae with Nutro or Serengeti, for example, without mixing them. The ingredients and feeding recommendations are very similar. It would be a different matter if somebody were switching from Cat Chow to Nature's Best.

Or she's going to want her Iams/RC in the kitchen every evening, and Pro Plan in the LR every morning.
