Hi Folks,

I'm Laura, please to meet you all!

I've just joined this most informative and helpful feline site to see if anyone can help with some advice - or advise that I'm going in the right / wrong direction! Apologies for the long post.....

Last week my 2 cats (brothers, 4 years old), husband and I were awoken my a catfight outside our bedroom window. The following fight has unfortuately resulted in my two boys attacking each other and I'm heartbroken. I have had them separated for 3 days, bought a Feliway diffuser, ordered feliway spray and have been swoping scents by way of towels from one cat to another. Over these days I have been letting them peek occassionaly at one another through the livingroom door. Yesterday, I again let them have a peek at each other through the door, whilst feeding some tuna. This seemed to work well as they sniffed at one another through the door. After some time praising them and making a fuss (things were calm) I slowly opened the door. For a couple of seconds they sniffed, things looked well but all of a sudden they started hissing and growling again. Lesson learned! I've separated them again and will start from the beginning and slowly re-introduce them to one another, as you would a new cat. I can't say I've noticed much of a strong hierarchy between them. Only previous points are Jerra very occasionally will move him out of the way for a favourite spot. They have always tussled with one another in the way of play fighting but this has never come to anything more serious.

Both boys are unchanged in their behaviour to my husband and I, lots of the usual purrs and rubs. Both are eating well and no change to litterbox behaviour.

I would be interested in advice about using vanilla extract and perhaps some felow feline owners reports on their coping / findings with re-directed aggression.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the welcome Katie. Yes, first ever horrible fight they have had. All previous fights have been play-fights.

Since this is the first time something along these lines has occurred...(and mind you this is only what I would do)....I would take them both to the vet to rule out anything medical. Cats can sometimes turn on each other if one becomes sick. If they receive clean bills of health...I would ask your vet's suggestions regarding what to try. It must have been incredibly scary and I'm glad you have them seperated. Sometimes, when my 2 get mad at each other (and mind you..mine are indoor only) I will rub one with a towel and then rub the other one with the same towel so it's smells like the first one. My cats however, have only had minor incidences with growling and occational chasing which only lasts 2 days at the most.

Good Luck...perhaps some other members will have other suggestions..so keep checking back. It is a holiday here in the good old USA and many members are out celebrating.
