Hi, I need some help here, I have a 4 year old Persian cat(Perriwinkle) that has resorted to useing my leather sofas as his scratching posts. He has been with us for several months now, and this behavior is new over the past 2 weeks. I know I read advice about this here before, but I can't seem to find it, any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Do you have a variety of scratching surfaces to scratch on? Sisal, carpet, cardboard? Different orientations? Flat, vertical? Secure enough that scratching doesn't upset them?

A deterrent might help. I suggest getting a couple of those citrus-scented car deodorizers. They're so strong you can cut them into several sections and tape them to your sofa to deter the cat from scratching there.

I have a sisel post, and 4 old chairs that he was useing, that have this sisel like material on them that he seemed to like to claw until he discovered the leather. I have tried propping the post near the sofa, and when I see him start to claw the sofa, I tell him no, and move him to the post, and put his paws on that, but then he stops and walks away. I now have contact paper on the part of the sofa he is targeting, sticky side out, that was what I remeber reading. I will get to Walmart this evening for the citrus car fresheners. Thank-you.

Get 3 scratching posts and put cat nip on them so kitty will gett he idea of what they are for. That should do the trick. If not you can always get a thing called 'Solf Paws"... they are caps you glue on to the nails and it should protect the sofa. You can also use double stick tape on the area kitty likes to scratch most to help stopit. But I would do that only after getting scratching posts. If you do all that, kitty should leave the sofa alone.

We had the same problem, abeit it was a fabric sofa, and bought them a cardboard scratching board (just lies down on the ground, but it has catnip in it, and they were IMMEDIATELY drawn to it). It's official name is Smarty Cat Super Scratcher. It's one of those that isn't too expensive...look here http://www.cat-toys-superstore.com/en-us/dept_20.html. I have to say, too, I've had tons of different scratchers, and NEVER had such wonderful success as I have with this one.

GOOD TIP: For the first couple weeks after purchasing a scratcher, when you see your kitty scratching something undesirable, pick them up, put their claws out, and have them "scratch" on the proper place...the scratching post. They'll get the idea!!)

I am so happy to have all of your wonderful input on this great site!!!!
I got a 7 foot climbing tree, and the cardboard scrather with the cat nip. I also put catnip all over the climber, and just like magic both my cats were drawn to them, and guess what!!! No more scratching the sofa. Perri loves to now scratch where he should!!Myhusband whats to know how come they don't make catnip for people. I think he was jealous of our cats getting "stoned" as he put it!!!!

That thing works like MAGIC! Oscar doesn't use anything but that now!

And picking them up after scratching something and putting them at the scratcher really does work! Great minds think alike!
