Hi all,
I just found this site yesterday and love it! So informative. I have always wanted to adopt a cat but my parents and, subsequently, my roommates, were never keen on the idea. I have started volunteering at the local humane society because I love animals, particularly cats, dogs and rabbits (I am the proud parent of two monster bunnies). Lately, due to a shortage of foster parents and a huge need, I decided to start fostering kittens. I am on my third litter and love it. It is so rewarding, although I don't appreciate being sniffed in the face at 3am only to be sneezed on, the little devil.
The first ones I had in my home were little balls of fluff who were absolutely insane. They were just so playful and seemed to think my legs (with or without clothing) was a nice place to climb. I learned the hard way to always wear pants. They have since gone onto homes of their own.
My next little kitten was recovering from URI. Since I have no other cats in my home, I was an ideal candidate for this little girl whom I named Beaker the Squeaker (after the muppets character) because she never meowed, only beeped (too cute). She was so affectionate, that it nearly broke my heart to give her back. She, too, has gone on to a new home.
Now, I have two kittens, a male and a female (Gypsy and Calico) who are very skittish around people. They are quite hissy but are still quite curious about the "big person lying on the floor" and mumbling stuff from a book. I see this as a good sign. I have them with me for four weeks at which point they will be vet checked again and, hopefully, go out for adoption.
Then, I will get another set, if available. It is so hard to give them up
but I keep telling myself that they are going to loving homes and that other kittens are in need of my help while they are gaining weight or recovering.
If anyone has any suggestions on socializing, I am always welcome to new ideas. I have already gotten lots from the feral forum.
