This was wrote when i found out my cat had mammary cancer - she had come to me as a 14 year old stray with numerous health issues and had never been spayed.

In loving memory of Blackie, who sadly died due to this terrible disease and whose death may have been prevented by being spayed.

This is for anyone who thinks their female cat doesnt need spaying as she is going to be indoor only.

Most people (until recently, me included) will think of the benefits of being spayed as population control. Some may also know of some of the health benefits such as less likely to become infected with FIV, FeLV, and injuries. Less known are pyometria (womb infections) and mammary (or breast) cancer.

Mammary cancer is normally common in older, unspayed females, although Siamese cats are prone to it at a young age. It is thought that cats get it due to the high levels of hormones associated with coming into season so many times, and is more common in cats that either arent allowed to get pregnant or have only a couple of litters over their entire life.

If cats are spayed before their first season, they are 200 times less likely to get mammary cancer. This benefit reduces with each heat until the cat reaches 2 1/2 years of age, when the benefit stops.

If caught early, tumours can be removed. There is a risk of them coming back, but this can take months, or even years.

Unfortunately by the time most cats are examined it is in advanced stages. Due to the aggressiveness of this cancer, the high incidence of recurrence (prob as cats have 8 mammary glands), and the fact that it spreads quickly, the prognosis is poor, the single most important factor being the size of the tumour.

So please, spay your cats but also do a regular breast exam on them, it is as easy as running your hands down both strips to notice any abnormalities, and if you do find any get them to the vets asap, you could buy them years.

Even though i was brought up with cats, i always thought having them spayed was for the obvious reason to stop unwanted kittens?, but when my vet told me it was also preventing mammary cancer i learnt something new that day.

My neighbour has also said he lost a cat that he loved a few years ago through mammary cancer by not getting his indoor cat spayed, and didn't realise this until it was too late

Thank you for that. The very first cat I had as a child was about a 9 month old calico who was already pregnant when she came to us. After the kittens were gone she was spayed immediately, mammary cancer is what took her life when I was 17.

Cheers Beckiboo, if only one cat's life can be saved due to the article, i wont feel as though she died in vain (she died in May, i had her a day short of 8 weeks). I had never heard of mammary cancer till she went for blood tests (i thought at 14 she would hve liver or kidney probs, but they came back fine!!) that the vet found them. Due to the kind of cat she was and her other health probs, we decided against spaying her, even though it might have bought her some time. I cant believe that her owner never thought of spaying her though, she was very vocal when she was in heat!!

Thank you for taking the time to write that
I am sure someone will read that message and change their minds about spaying their females.

I just got my siamese cat Elle spayed a few days ago, she is recovering very well!

I have a kitten that will get spayed in September when she is about 5 months old. I'm looking to get it done when she is a bit older but hasn't had her first heat yet. Even though this is a few months in the future, I'm still worried. But I know I would be worried more if she got mammary cancer or pyometra.

Thank you for this post. It takes away some of the anxiety of getting my baby girl spayed. I know the alternatives are much worse!

That makes me feel so good, i am glad that the article can help. I think I was meant to have Blackie, to educate me about this horrible illness and to do whatever i could to make sure other people dont have to go through the same thing.
