Hello all,

This is my first time posting here and I hope you can help. My wife found a little kitten that cant be more than 6 weeks old. He was infested with fleas and extremely underweight. we've cleaned him up and have had him for 4 days now and he seems to be getting better. we both love animals and we have a cat and a basset hound. however, we are also expecting our first child. there is no way we can keep this little guy. from what i hear, cats tend to smother babies? i dont want to take him to an animal shelter because they might put him to sleep. im not sure if this is exceptable here but i was hoping there is someone here that would be willing to take him being that everyone here is a cat lover. he is white with black hind legs and a black tail. he is very calm and cute.

we live in the los angeles area (SGV). you can email me if youre interested. i also have pics that i can email to you.

thanks and i appreciate any advice.

John,

Hi, cats do not smother babies. This is an old wives tale that has no truth in it whatsoever. It started because it was thought that the milk was an attractant to cats, and that they would cover the infant's mouth and nose in an attempt to get all the milk. THIS NEVER HAPPENED and contrary to popular belief all cats do not love milk. He sounds like he has already settled in with you, why don't you just keep him?

thanks for clearing that up hissy. my wife and i both work full time and being that he is still underweight and needs a lot of attention, at this time neither one of us have the time for him. he needs someone to be with him all day while we are at work. there is no way he can be neglected all day. my wife has actually taken the past 3 days off just to take care of him.

he deserves better attention than we can give him at this time.

thanks,

john

Hi OneBigFamily and welcome to The CatSite

I have a friend that has two cats and she has two little girls. They are just fine and healthy as can be. Also, they have research that proves that children growing up with pets have less allergies, asthma, etc. than children that don't have any animals. The only thing is that your wife should NOT change the litter while pregnant. I don't know exactly what is in the feces or urine of cats but it could harm the fetus. So, it will be YOUR duty to change the litter while your wife is pregnant. The only harm I could ever see for your newborn is perhaps he/she may have an allergy problem. That can happen but as I said before, there are many out there that have no problem such as my friend Tammy.

I wish you good luck with your precious kitty. Thank God you saved her. We have four kitties and our last was found as a stray outside our apt. last November. She was starving and cold. We can't imagine not having her in our life now. She brings us such joy!! God's creatures great and small!!

I look forward to hearing from you!

If the little one is vet checked and eating well now, then you need to decide whether in an ideal world you would keep him. If the answer is yes, then maybe there is someone who could pop in once a day while you are at work, for a week or two, until he can be left all day and is used to the other animals. If you really decide you do not want to, then you need to ask around at vets, no-kill animal shelters etc or try Petfinders website for a new home for him. But you sound like animal lovers who might welcome another cat to be a buddy tot he one you have already. Whatever you decide, good for you for caring for him, and good luck.

John...it's great you rescued this little one...unfortunately....every shelter and rescue is struggling since it is kitten season right now. I would suggest you ask around your work to see if there is anyone who would be willing to care for this kitten.

you could always try to find a foster for a few weeks or someone to 'cat sit' during the day until he can be left alone.

i hope you dont intend to get rid of yor other cat because of that nasty myth

My grandson was around cats & horses since he came home from the hospital. He is 9 years now, and has had antibiotics only 5 times in his life, the first time he was already 3. His parents both have allergies, but he doesn't; I kept my animals outside when my girls were little and they have allergies. So I believe those studies that say early exposure can be a good thing.

Please, forget any notions about cats and babies! That is utter nonsense - not sure I like the term "old wive's tale" if only bec he sounds somewhat sexist (like men don't gossip, lol) but that is rather what it is. Of course, animals and small children need to be supervised but that is just common sense. If anything, having a cat will help your baby!
