i have recently adopted two cats from family due to one being pregnant and kept outdoors...we want to make sure mom and litter are taken good care of....problem is i have never had a pregnant cat before and this is her first litter....i work during the day and am afraid something could go wrong should she deliver her kittens when im away...i also have no idea how far along she is...she is showing about an inch protruding belly from a side view and it droops about two inches down maybe...im thinking about five wks from what i have read....one more thing, her buddy has been with her from day one and i wonder if i should remove tom from the room but how to do so without stressing her out...he is her security ...any advice would help out greatly...thank you for your time

If tom is "intact" you should not have them together at all. He should, by all means be neutered. If tom is just his name, he should also not be in the room with her when you are not home, because he could harm the kittens if they come while you aren't home.

A vet will tell you how far along the female is. That is the best way-

First, congrats on your new baby!
Okay, now to your question. Most deliveries go without a problem, and most people wake up or come home to find kittens, and they weren't there either.

If she is five weeks, then she should have about another 4 weeks. A cat's average gestation is 62-63 days, but can be from 58-72 days, but normally it's 62-63. That should give you a time frame to work on.

It's best to remove the tom from the room during delivery and until the kittens are old enough to run away in case of danger. Some toms will kill young in order to send the mother in mourning, and in turn, send her into heat. Now some toms are very fatherly. We didn't let Billy near our kittens, but found out that he is a great daddy. If you do introduce them, do it after they are 1, preferrably 2, weeks old, and supervise until you are comfortable that there is no chance he'll harm them. That's my suggestion about that.
Might I also suggest getting your tom neutered. To many people's surprise, a cat can get pregnant again while nursing. I once had a cat get pregnant less than a week after having her kittens. They can go into heat extremely fast after delivering. It's best for the tom to be neutered to prevent that until the female can be spayed.

Good luck with your baby and soon to be babies! I can't wait to see pictures!

Cassie

P.S. What's their names?
