I know my boy is a little overweight and I'm concerned about that, he's approx. 15-16 pounds and he's built short. I recently measured how much he's eating, which I haven't done before. Well, for his weight it's suggested he eat 1 cup to 1 3/4 cup of dry food daily. I measured approx. what he eats an average day and it's not even quite a half a cup.
He does eat about 1/4 of canned food daily too. He's pretty sedentary, especially now that it's warmer but he does get a little exercise most days. I just feel bad that he's not really eating that much, no wonder he always acts so hungry now that I've been cutting back. I alternate with Royal Canin Slim and Natural Balance regular formula. I notice that the Royal Canin leaves him feeling even more hungry. Any suggestions on if I should feed him more, since that's barely what's suggested for him to be eating daily? Does anyone else have cats that just seem to have a slow metabolism? Any advice I would appreciate.

natural balance makes a good wt control formula, but I am not goint to suggest that... I am suggesting that you find the lowest carb food you can find .. EVo by innova would be great but it can be hard to find.. Pro plans natural is high protein( this if I remember has no by products).. Nutros indoor formulas have lacarnatine(sp?) and that can help slim an over wt kitty... Are you reading for his current wt or what he should be??

Lisa, I'd honestly go (if he's not had this done recently) for a good exam and bloodwork...make sure nothing else is going on with him - and get your vet's opinion. I like the idea that Sharky proposed of changing the diet more to a lower carb one ( most diet foods have more carbs)....even to consider an approved by your vet, homecooked diet.

Thanks Sharky, I'm reading for his current weight, but I guess you have to consider there activity level and Sash is 12 years old and not that active. I will look into the foods you suggested. I do know Lacarnatine is in Royal Canin Slim, that is suppossed to help with weight loss.

Thanks Pat, Sash's annual checkup is coming up in Sept. so I will mention it to my vet, he's pretty much always been this way though. I've heard how carbs in dry foods can contribute to weight gain just like in people, I guess. Sash loves his dry food though, but he also enjoys canned food too. I'm gonna start searching for a lower carb food and see how that goes.
