My name is Piyu, i'm a first time cat owner. I just recently adopted a cat from a kill shelter named Shea. He's roughly 2 years old and declawed. He is a Grey and White Tuxedo with the sweetest temperment.

He's been sneezing since he came to my house and he was sort of trying to hack up something (but nothing came out). He is eating, I feed him Nutro Natural Choice Weight Management for Indoor Cats and give him Trim Treats (he's kind of overweight when I got him). He also gets fresh water twice a day and regular brushings.

I'm not sure why he's sneezing (every once in awhile -- today he sneezed about 7 times) and he only hacked/gagged once while he hid under my bed. He wanders around a lot and loves to get brushed and nuzzles me when I'm sleeping.

Do you think he has some sort of allergy or cold? This is his first three days at his new home. Also, there is no strange discharge and his nose is moist.

Welcome to the site
He is really cute...When I adopted my cat from the humane society, she had all kinds of problems:sneezing, diarrhea and what not. She got better after a week or so. I would take him to the vet for a checkup. My vet told me that at the shelter they catch all kinds of stuff from the other cats.
Hope he gets better
Have fun!

The best way to confirm everything is ok and that he doesn't have a food allergy is to take him to the vet for a check up.

Welcome to TCS, Piyu!
Congratulations on your new boy - he is gorgeous!! You might want to put a post in the Health&Nutrition forums, for some extra feedback. A vet visit is probably the only way to know for sure if it's something that needs extra monitoring, or if maybe there's something in your house, maybe an air freshener, for instance, that could be irritating his nose. Look forward to reading more posts on how you're doing! I love the pink collar & those green eyes, by the way...

Hi Piyu and welcome to the Site
DaddyCat and I have four kitties and of the three I would say that Basia is our allergic one. Only with her right eye though. Every once in a while she'll tear up in her eye and it will partially close. I will pat it with a warm wash cloth and she's all better after that. It could be the dust from the litter once in a while too. We use Tidy Cat since they all seem to like it. We tried changing the litter to something new and Tiger, our one year old, went potty in the hallway near the bathroom!! Needless to say we went back to Tidy Cat.

I think that your kitty is just getting used to your house...perhaps there is some dust or whatever that he's not accustomed to. Sneezing is not a bad thing...it may help clear his sinuses. Again, it may be the litter that he is trying to get used to. I would just watch to make sure that he is eating and sleeping and drinking water. All that should prove that he is healthy and happy. We him cuddling next to you while your sleeping is a sign of trust. That is so sweet!!

When we added Jewel to our little kitty family, Basia would not eat and she lost weight. We ended up taking her to the vet and the vet said that it was because of the new cat. She did get over it though. It took about 2 weeks but she's just fine now. In fact, we did take in another stray, Tiger. She's fine with her and didn't even get upset. Any kind of change is traumatic to a kitty so I would just give your new kitty a chance to adapt to his surroundings and he'll be just fine.

We love this site and I'm sure you'll find a lot of good information and advice here

Welcome to TCS. I woudl definitely bring you rcat to the vet. Our cat was sneezing when we brought her home from the shelter. She had an Upper Respiratory Infection along with many other problems. Better safe than sorry!

Welcome, piyu!
You have a fine looking cat there! The sneezing is probably nothing serious, as others have said look into anything in your environment that might be irritating his respiratory system. Otherwise, it could be just a little bug he picked up at the shelter. Our second cat Dubya (2nd picture) came to us from our local vet's office with some sneezing and a runny eye, but both cleared up in a few days.
