Last week my cat chased a very large mouse; we held the cat back so the mouse could escape & put down humane traps. The next day I noticed Booboo has scrapes on his face near his eye & in & around his ear (one side only). Could this mouse have attacked him in self-defence? I noticed another skin lesion today on his belly. He is not picking at these areas but they seem fresh every day. We're taking him into the vet on Monday but we're very concerned this may have been a rat carrying diseases (I know, and INSIDE the house). Booboo in an indoor kitty, he's up on his vaccines & his behavior is the same. Any ideas? Thx. This is agreat site with so many caring animal lovers.

It's possible that the mouse got him. Have you seen him scratching at himself at all? The only thing that would concern me with a mouse and it would depend on weather it was a true mouse or a rat as well as where you live. Is Rabies, but if all is up to date then he should be okay until Monday.

Sandy, thx so much for your prompt reply. He hasn't been scratching; all behaviour is normal - well, for him. The city ceased setting traps in the sewers so we're having a rodent infestation in this urban area with a lot of construction. I panicked (we love him so) but he's healing up nicely today and we're watching him very closely. We will still bring him in to the vet for the deworming they suggested & a checkup. Thx again. Much appreciated.

Update: Vet said excessive scratching & licking could be anxiety but most likely auto-immune disorder. He gave him a steriod shot (milky-white substance) & checked him for worms (neg). I switched his food from Hill Science to Max Cat. My aunt (animal lover & very knowledgeable about pet health) said he could have been allergic to the food (ground-up beaks & feathers - yuck). Max Cat is not supposed to have any by-products & is preserved with Vit E instead of chemicals. So far so good; he is doing great & is more affectionate to boot! Play mice are a great activity booster to keep him from licking & scratching. A happy ending.

Glad he's doing okay! I am actually going through the same thing with one of my cats. With allergies it's hard to tell what may be causing the reaction. My cat Sammy had his steroid injection in the middle of Dec and it helps short term. Febuary we are having his blood drawn and sent to a lab. He is being tested for food allergies as well as inhaled allergies. It will be much easier and faster to find out what he is allergic to. If you or the vet decides to test, I would ask them about Bio Medical services. They are the least expensive of all the companies that do allergy testing.

Just a little update. We went back for two more shots which helped for a few months each time. This last shot (one wk ago) hasn't done the trick. We even tried Omega 3 oil (for a moisturized coat) on his food which he loves. We're going to try another vet-recommended hypo-allergenic food & take him in again tomorrow. I guess this is a pretty common problem & we just have to try everything! I think we're switching back to Medi-Cal Preventive again. The vet said duck is the best & chicken in the worst. If anyone has a food recommendation I'd love to hear it! :girly2:
