I have no idea why but as soon as I start cleaning out the litter box the whole gang thinks it's time to get together.

Either it's time to play or it reminds
them they need to go potty.

And now that I have 3 cats, not only is it more to scoop.. but more kitties to take out of the litter box as I'm trying to clean it.

*sigh* Does anyone else have this problem??

YES!

El Husbandino has the "tail end" duty (of course, I get the cute end), and he has to sneak into the room and close the door to get it accomplished!

My oldest one likes to go in WHILE I am scooping!! Kind of like "here, get this one while you're at it".
And, of course, he has to dig to find the perfect spot.. which takes forever. What a pain in my butt!!

Oh yes... very familiar with that.
Mik will scratch and scratch in the box (very loudly at that!) until I actually come and clean it! And I clean it every day... he's very particular.

Jewel (3rd picture) is infamous for using the litterbox immediately after it's been changed. The other cats are more likely to just climb in and start pawing and rearranging the litter according to their tastes. I'm just glad they got out of the habit of doing that at 3 in the morning!

All 4 just line-up...sometimes no-line...the 2 little kittens go 2 at a time sometimes.

Maybe they think it's real funny, that the second we are done cleaning that litter box, it's time to get it real messy again. I don't know...

Festus does this. Whenever I clean the litter box, she usually comes in so she can use it either as I clean, or as soon as I am done.

When we only had one litterbox in the bathroom, if I was busy cleaning it, Garfield would simply use the bathroom rug! Now THAT is annoying!

Too funny!

My cat just gets really curious and lurks around the bathroom door.

Standard Operating Procedure here. I think they have a great interest in their litterboxes and need to supervise me when I'm fooling around with them!!

My hubby cleans the kitty box every morning. Lacie waits until he is all finished and jumps in. He cleans what she did out and she jumps in again. The other cats are watching like this is some kind of comedian prank to play on dad.. hahaha This behavior lasts until my hubby gives up.. Then all the cats leave like OK SHOWS OVER..

this all sounds way too familiar.

Whenever I go to clean the litterbox i usually get about 1 piece out before 1 or the other...or both of them remembers that they meant to go...and could i just wait for 5 or 10 minutes while they rearrange the mess i've made and complete there business. Rambo sometimes climbs in when i'm cleaning and attacks the scoop...he'll then lie down in there and refuse to come out. I guess he thinks he has to protect his poop from the scoop monster!!!

Sophie will watch and wait while i scoup!.

She could have just been on the litterbox, but she'll make sure she manages to do something again no matter how small once i scoup, so i have to sit and wait for her to finish!

It's all the same here. I start scooping and unless it's afternoon sleepy time, at least one, if not all, are ready and waiting and when I'm done, it's into the litter box they go.
They know the "scooping sound" too. I can be really quiet about it and they will still come from the upstairs.

They have to - it is an instinct to mark their territory. Usually the alpha cat will go first, then the others. I close the door when I am doing hte boxes, then at least I get to do it without interruption! But htey are usually pawing at the door.

Yeah, very common thing. Clean litter boxes don't stay that way for long in my house. Hammie & Zorro actually WAIT IN LINE to be the first to poo or pee in the things!!! Hammie actually prances around after he's done and acts like he just won an award!

Pepper will usually sit there and watch me clean out her litter box but even if she doesn't she seems to know when I'm finished cuz I barely have time to put the top back on the box and she's in it digging around and trying to flick litter everywhere
Gotta love that cat

Willow doesn't care much, but if Buffy so much as hears the sifting of kitty litter, she comes running and will be breathing down my neck. She'll watch me scoop the scooper in once or twice, then will jump in and start digging around (not digging-to-potty but digging-like-a-dog-just-'cause-it's-fun) so litter goes flying. Then I pick her up and put her beside the box, and I scoop again. She jumps back and does kicks the litter around even harder, and if I try to put my hands under her to take her out, she lies down so I can't pick her up. If I keep trying, she'll kick me in her ticked-off way. But most of the time she seems to do it in good humour, and gets fed up after a while.
