Hi All, I am a cat foster for a no-kill shelter here in Columbus, Ohio. I am going into my fourth year there, I usually don't take pregnant cats (I hate when kittens die) but one found me, she has been here for 2 weeks and still no kittens. Thanks for all the info I have read here, it is great to find others who share my passion.

Thanks Katie, we have a beautiful new building now, but of course the need for fostering is still there. I have only had pregnant cats twice, the last one was awful, the mom was sick and the kittens all died. This one should be better, my friend took her from a neighbor of hers who never got her spayed, but fed her, so her weight and overall health is good. Shes only 2 and she has had at least 4 other litters. we just decided enough is enough, we're taking her. her name is Cher, she is so sweet and friendly. Im sure you know how scared most fosters are at first, Cher is great. Hey, do you know if its okay for a pregnant cat to have catnip?

I don't know....I didn't let my foster mom cat or her babies have any catnip. Sorry about your last foster experience....I lost a kitten to pneumonia, fortunately her 2 sisters are doing great and should be spayed and placed soon.

Thanks so much to everyone who welcomed us here. Of course you all know how people can be, they dont understand why I foster, and "the house is full of cats". I learned how important this work is when I fostered for the first time. I called a lady from the shelter to discuss fostering and within 36 hours I had my first foster: a terrified pregnant black cat. (Never let those foster people know you are available unless you mean it! They will surely bring cats to you immediately, ha!) Lisa found the cat living at a dumpster in an apartment complex. She also had 2 six month old kittens from a previous litter with her, she rescued them as well. But it was summer, and the shelter and all the foster homes were full. So as soon as she heard about me, she ran over there and trapped them. I named the cat Bella, and when she finally came out to meet me 3 days later, we bacame friends. She had the kittens a few days after that, and it was rough: one died the next day, and one died a week later. That left 2, one big fat healthy black one, and a tiny little runt, also black. Now keep in mind that i was an inexperienced foster, never saw a dead kitten in my life. in the second week , the tiny black one had a swollen eye, I rushed her into the vet. Because we got there so quickly, the vet was able to save her eye. Then, she got a horrible cold. I was distraught, not wanting to lose another kitten. I nursed her thru that, and unbelievably, she pulled through. of course you all know who that was , my little Gina. I named her after one of my favorite characters on Days of Our Lives (I was home at the time, not working and really enthralled with that soap.) Her name is actually Princess Gina Von Amburg, after Hope Brady's evil twin. She was sickly at first, it was a herpes virus that she was born with. But she is my little princess, now 3 years old and better than ever. (seriously, I feed her bits of baked chicken every day or so) I do have other cats, but Gina and I share this incredible bond. She is shy and timid but loves to cuddle and play with me. As soon as I find a few minutes, I will post some pictures of her, and my Gina tattoo as well! The reason I am sharing this story, besides that I am proud of my Princess, is this: If I had not volunteered to foster, her mother Bella would never had been rescued that summer. Without a home and vet care, little Gina would have died a sad, painful death outside. So whenever I get tired of litter boxes, and medicating scared cats, and running to the vet all summer, I just look at Gina and remember what this is all about.Sorry to go on, but it is so great to find a community that understands me! Cheryl
