I hope it is the real deal. Remember though you have to count the value of the cruise package as income and pay taxes on it so be aware.

Gosh it's so exciting - BUT I always remember the old adage - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I've had those calls as well and they have turned out to be time-share deals where we would have to go and watch a film and heaven knows what else. We always decline.

I agree that if you want a vacation, do it yourself, there are lots of packages and last minute deals out there that are more reliable.

Be careful - I 'won' a two night stay in Las Vegas last year with Special-t-travel and paid tax up front on a credit card. Then after I had booked dates and planned a holiday around it all they told me that there was an extra charge of $70 ' high season' rate. I questioned this but got nowhere. Then when we went ( I had no choice by then) I asked at the hotel and htere was no high season rate, and I could have booked the room direct for $4 more than the 'prize'. Needless to say, I got nowhere fast when I complained, it cost me $50 more in telephone calls.

If it isn't legit then look into a regular cruise, like someone else mentioned. We've been thinking about a cruise for our honeymoon and it is amazing just how affordable cruises can be. Carnival had cruises that started at around $350 per person for four and five day cruises. They always have sales and upgrade sales as well. They include food and onboard activities!

I know that you probably need the vacation but, save your money and book with a reputable travel agency. If you like, I'll e-mail the link to the one that I've used in the past.
The more I think about it and do my research, the more I definitely think you are right. I'm going to look into those cruises that Katherine mentioned, I think. They sound very do-able

*Sigh* It was fun to think about.

Search the Carnival site and see what you would want to do and what cruise would be good for you and then check sites like Travelocity and Expedia to see if you can get it even cheaper. Lauren and I knocked $30 off the price by booking with Travelocity!

Movin' on up!
Do not book directly, with the cruise line. If you use a block booker, you'll save a bundle. This is the company that I use http://wwwv.cruisesinc.com/travel/cruises/default.jsp

I've always gone with Royal Caribbean and have never had a bad experience. Carnival has had too many mishaps, for my taste and too many kids. RC tends to cater to a more relaxed crowd. I loved the themed nights: 50s & 60s, country & western, sumo karaoke. The food and the service are to die for.

That's pretty much the very reason I've never cruised with Royal Caribbean! It's too old a crowd for my reasons for traveling. This cruise in October will be my 2nd with Carnival and I've also been on one with Princess (now THAT is luxury - and boy do you pay for it). I've never had a problem with Carnival and had a great mix of partying it up and lazing in the sun. I agree that you should book with someone other than the cruise line, but keep in mind that getting an actual travel agent will probably cost you more. Whichever line you choose (which, if you're looking for a cheaper one will probably be Carnival or Royal Caribbean) just make sure it's exactly what you want!

Also, I just checked out that site she listed to compare the price Lauren and I got on our cruise from Travelocity to their prices and it's basically the exact same.
I really think those kinds of sites (the cruise one she listed, Travelocity, etc) are the BEST for booking trips like that!

You could try to see if booking the cruise itself through the cruise line is cheaper. I found that the cruise I was interested in through Carnival was cheapest through them directly, but that the flight was 3x as much. I found a better flight price through expedia.com. We could do a four night cruise to Mexico with flight for around $900 total in December. Royal Caribbean was similar in price, but I've also heard they are better. I've heard really good things about Norweigan (sp?).
