Hi,

I read the Peeing archives and I do have a question about bleach & cats.

My outdoor kitty Lucky (you may remember her...she was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and is outdoors), is now sleeping in the house during the night, well this morning she pee'd in the bathroom (very considerate of her!). Luckily, it is all ceramic tile and she missed the rug (which can be washed in the washer anyway). I did clean it with hot water and then bleach. Will she go to that spot again? I always thought Bleach was bad for cats.

I did watch my little guy Diamond (he is only indoors) he didn't seem to gravitate towards it, but then again, he is used to using the cat box.

I am going to get a cat box for the back yard and hopefully Lucky will get used to using it and then use the ones in the house during the night.

I appreciate any info...

Some cats are attracted to the smell of bleach and will pee on the bleached spot, but others don't respond in this way. I would think that on a tile floor this shouldn't be a problem.

You might try filling a litter box with potting soil for Lucky to use. Each day scoop out any soiled soil, and put in a cup or two of kitty litter. Before long, the litter box will be filled with kitty litter and Lucky will have been gradually taught to use litter rather than dirt. (Use potting soil so that you don't bring bugs and worms into your house.)

Also...do keep in mind that peeing on the floor is a HUGE indicator of urinary tract problems. So if he continues to do this, you will want to consult your vet.

Thanks for the idea of the potting soil/litter! I'll try that!

Diamond has had Urinary Tract Infection before he turned 1 year old (he is now 6 years old), so I remember the symptoms. So far I haven't seen the symptoms in Lucky, although Lucky is a female and Diamond is a male and from what I understand from my regular vet, it is more common in males. But I will definitely keep a look-out

We have just started having her sleep indoors at night, before that she was a completely outdoor cat. But since 2 weeks ago (today) she was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and we spoil her more and let her come inside and sleep on our bedroom floor at night as long as she wants.

I really think that the poor dear couldn't hold it in till I got up and decided "well that is the room Ana goes potty..so I'll do the same!"

Make sure that the potting soil is organic, otherwise you might have a bug infestation-

You can use Deft Detergent for babies on the spot to take up the urine (thanks Gayef for this great tip)

Wow! I wouldn't have thought of that! I just assumed all bagged potting soil would be okay.
