My cat Lucky has a black discharge in and outside her nose. This has just started lately, and I am not sure if I should be concerned or not. She doesn't seem to be having any difficulty breathing, isn't sneezing excessively, and is acting and playing like normal.

Is this something I should be worried about?
Could she be allergic to something?

thanks in advance!

A colored discharge is often due to a secondary bacterial infection in conjunction with an upper respiratory infection.

I second that, My vet always told me that if the discharge was colored to take them to the vet as it's a sign of infection

Hope Lucky feels better!

Really? oh jeez...even if she doesn't seem to be feeling badly or sneezing and is acting the same she could still have all that?

cats are very good at hiding things, it is part of their survival instinct. Anything that is an unusual colour should be checked over by a vet, or at least discussed over the phone with them, they are the ones who are qualified, and also should know your animal.

My cat also has a black discharge. Well, it looks more like dried snot just inside her nose. It started about a month ago. I did take her to the vet and they told me that it is just snot and couldn't find anything wrong with her. She is acting totally healthy and I even had her spayed with the snotty nose. I don't know if it will ever go away but since the vet says its nothing and she is acting fine, I'm not going to worry about it for now. I just keep my eye on it. You should take your cat the vet though just in case it is something.

Thanks for this information that it could be a bacterial infection. Red Cat had such a discharge along with sneezing for several months before I took him to the vet for his routine exam and vaccinations a few weeks ago. I didn't worry too much about it, as Red Cat does have allergies, and always seems to start his sneezing and runny nose routine in late winter-early spring. I hadn't remembered the dark discharge before, though. My vet didn't seem to be too concerned because of RC's history of allergies. However, I will want to check with the vet again after he finishes his medicine for colitis. He is also due to have his teeth cleaned soon, and I don't want him to have anethesia if he already has an URI.

i was wondering about allergies...since it only seemed to start up with the warm weather of the last few weeks. When the windows are closed and the A/C is on i don't see any discharge....but lucky's behaviour has changed somewhat at the same time. the combination of the two has me a bit worried.
