*turns off caps* I found a baby bird hanging out of its nest by one foot. I thought it was dead, but it started to move. Sense it had a few problems, we couldn't return it, because the mother would reject it. So we took it inside.

Its in a small carrier, with spredded paper towels, towel, and towel on the outside. We heated the room. Now we making wet catfood for it to eat. Poor little orhan.

Anything else can we do?

ooo more details please!!!! The bird...did it have any feathers? I urge you to call your vet about feeding it, wet cat food may not be the best idea. Was anything broken on the bird? please more details :-)

Yes, it does have feathers, but there all bald spots too. There seems to be a large tumor like thing on its neck. Thanks for your concern, and willingness to help.

Update: The baby is breathing a bit stronger!
He/she has also opened and then closed its eyes.

im really sorry im no expert but im really not sure if it was a good idea to take it in. What most people dont know are 2 things
1- if you touch a baby bird that DOES NOT mean the mom will disown it! its a myth.
2-Even though you could not see the mom, the mom was probably VERY close watching the bird. When baby birds are learning to fly the mom isnt always standing in the nest watching it, they are typically in a tree, or edge of the house...ect...watching the baby bird. Mother birds dont help the babys learn like cartoons show they do. Even though you couldnt seee a mom it was probably watching you take the baby.

please dont think im mad, im not, most people just dont know this stuff.

but definentaly call the vet

I'm not an expert but I watched our finches "give birth" and worried about whether or not we'd have to try to hand feed them if the parent's didnt, so I read up on it. It looked like it could be very dangerous to do if you're not experienced and/or don't have someone to show you how to properly do it. You could EASILY give a baby bird crop burn and kill it by feeding it yourself even with proper food (which they have available for hand feeding in pet stores).

Tiny baby birds must be fed every couple of hours so you're probably better off placing him back in the nest. He's used to mommy feeding him and probably wouldn't know to eat cat food if you gave it to him in a bowl... and you could really hurt or kill him by feeding it to him.

If the tumor thing is on the front side of his neck just above his chest, it's his "crop", somewhat of a tummy. It's probably full of food, which means his mommy was feeding him... I'd put him back out and watch for mommy to come back.

i completely agree with sooz123, please put the bird back, nature knows what to do. you may think your helping but it could only hurt it more. but if you insist on keeping the bird, use a CLEAN eye dropper to feed it with, and slowly! dn force the bird to eat.

I'm calling right now. I had no choice. I know thats a myth, but if the baby is injured, then you have to...

I can feed him every few hours. Its summer vacation, I have lots of time.

Just to let you know, the baby was there for a long time, hanging out of its nest, in shock. Had we not saved it, it would have died. It was almost dead.

Edit: Also, the nest is about to fall out. There is no way the mom could help it.

ok please when you make your first post put more details into it, you didnt say how long it was their or how it was injured. im not mad, but i still think it would have been a better idea to unstick the bird and put it back in the nest

EDIT>>> wat did the vet say to feed it?

Well, at the very least get down to the pet store before they close and get some proper food and then read up on it thoroughly before trying it... let us know what the vet says!

you said you have lots of time this summer... what about when its hungry at 3 in the morning...then 2 hours later? what about when you want to go out with friends? im really not trying to detur you, but you cant make that bird rely on you, at this point in its life is when it NEEDS to be with its mom outside, learing how to be a bird

We're not keeping it forever.
We're doing the best we can tonight, and then taking to a nature center tomorow.

I called a vet, they only do cats and dogs. Mom is getting some food right now.

I'll call another vet now.

What I'm going to do is see if the baby's mom comes back. If so, later on we will put the baby in a warm box next to the nest. The nest is falling down...(The vet suggested the box idea. I want to see if the mom comes back though. I'm trying to do the best I can to keep the bird alive)

Thank you. I'm gonna keep checking. He's staying with us till we can see her, or see signs of her. If she never some back, he's going to a nature center.

keep us updated, dont forget the mom may be scared to come back because her baby is gone...she may think a preditor is lurking...ie...you (no offence ment at all!)

depending on what type of baby bird it is, you should be feeding it raw hamburger mixed with diluted milk. There is no way this baby is going to eat bird seed or commercial bird food. If it is an endangered bird, then a rehab center will take it, if it is a common bird- sparrow, pigeon etc, they may refuse it. Keep it warm- keeping it in a box with straw inside is your best bet and keep it away from other people and pets. It is hard to save wildlife you could lose this one easily despite your best intentions.

Update: We think we may have seen the mother!
So, what we're going to do is leave it outside in its new we made it, and see if she takes it. We are checking on it ALOT. So, we have fed it and he was chirping and leaving his mouth open for us, a VERY good sign.

We are going to take it back in if the mother doesn't take it.
