I am not an American but while Lincoln seems the obvious choice (keeping the country together et al), I think FDR who is really the father of the current kind of political system (democracy but with some compassion, noblesse oblige if you like) in rhe US - it is borrowed from other ideas but he was the one to intriduce it in the US. He was President for 4 terms after all - prob the greatest president at any rate.
In Canada, we chose Tommy Douglas - former Premier of Sask who introduced what we now know as our health care system. I voted for him (early and often, lol) tho some of the credit also goes to Justice Emmett Hall who brught the system to the federal conservative govt. Douglas was a socialist - and as a side note, is the grandfather of Keifer Sutherland.

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but Reagan??? Over Lincoln and MLK? Methinks not!
