I think i should post this here...if not sorry...

I dont know much about kittens and stuff like that, so it got me thinking. I, awhile ago decided when i get a house (when money will allow) i want to adopt one pregnant cat and keep all the kittens. And spay/ nuter them all ASAP after. Im just wondering is this ok to do? or do kittens have to be adopted out? I have heard stories of mothers hating their kittens after a while. If for some odd reason this wouldnt be safe for any of them i wouldnt do it. But i think that as of now, this is what i would like to do. Just wondering if any of you know, if this is all good and stuff to do... thanks a bunch in advance

I am sure someone will be along to answer this question but I will leave this with you. Only speaking from experience myself I would keep the mom and the kitties.. As soon as the mother is able to be fixed I would do this right away and when the kittens are ready then I would get the spayed or neutered too.

I have had a mom and her kitties brought up together and they were fine. On the other had my Aunt had a mom with 4 babies , she didn't get the mother fixed nor did she get the babies fixed in time that one of the males actually got the mother pregnant and the females didn't seem to get along very well.

I am thinking the difference was due to having the mother fixed and babies fixed and not having them fixed.

As I mentioned someone will be along to let you know what is the best way to do this.

As long as you are able financially and domestically to care for multiple cats, then there should be no problem. I have in the past kept kittens and they have been fine alongside the Mom. Yes, there is a period when the momcat hisses and swats them away when she is weaning them, but as long as there is space for her not to feel threatened and to get away for a while, then they will learn to be friends. I had a mom and son who were best buddies and used to gang up on all the other cats of the neighbourhood.

I think a lot will depend on organization you work with as well as how the mom acts after she has her kittens. Our rescue has had cats that were incredibly loving towards their kittens and we've had mom's that couldn't wait to get away from their kittens. If you have the patience....fostering pregnant cats is something that is deperately needed. A lot of people don't have the time or space to keep a pregnant cat through her pregnancy and to the point where the kittens are old enough for adoption.

Just had a thought about this (takes a while sometimes) and would an organisation allow a person to adopt a pregnant cat? I know the ones i foster for wont let cats go till they have been spayed, and they take the cats to make sure it is done, i can only imagine in case the cat escapes before the new owners have time to get the cat to the vets, as we all know how quickly they come into heat after having/weaning kittens. I do live in the UK though, so rules might be different where you are.

The agency I foster for allows the foster Mom first pick of any pet. So if you wanted to keep them all they would be fine with that. Or you could let a foster agency know of your plan-often they get requests for help and they are overloaded so they cannot help, so they turn people away. Instead, they could direct that cat to you.

I have known people who have an accidental pregnancy and keep all the kittens, with spay/neuter, and all did fine.

But if you are really wanting multiple cats, a good way to get them is to foster for a few years. Then you rehome lots of nice kitties, but any that really steal your heart you can keep. And if you get some that are "unadoptable" for whatever reason, you could keep them. That is part of what helps me keep my numbers low, what if I have a foster kitten who is born blind or with some other problem? Then I could just keep him, changing my number from 2 to 3, rather than from 10 to 11! LOL!

But some people cannot give kits away. If you can care for them, and want to be "greedy" and keep all your little sweeties, I say go for it.
