I bought a kitten from a pet store about two weeks ago. Yes, I know... buying from pet stores is bad.
I normally rescue all of my animals, but it was a difficult situation...

Anyway, on to the question...

My new kitten, Cricket, has runny stools. I was wondering if this is normal for kittens. He's about ten weeks old. I have another cat, but I was too young when I got her to remember if this happened with her, too. I just thought that it might be because of his food having a lot of protein in it. I'm not sure, though, so I'm asking. Maybe he has worms? I'll be taking him to the vet this week...

He doesn't act sick. He's as energetic and talkative as can be. He's eating, drinking, tinkling... the works.

What do you all think?

Thanks,

Emily

He really needs to see a vet especially if he did come from a kitty mill because they do not care for their animals one bit- all the animals are is $ in the bank to them.

Thank you very much for replying.

I know that it's bad to get animals from pet stores. I know that I shouldn't have. I did buy my first cat from a pet store when I was too young to know the difference, though, and she didn't have any health problems. Hopefully it will be the same case with little Cricket. Or at least something that can be corrected. I set up an appointment for this week.

Thank you for answering so quickly.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Kitty should definitely see the vet - any new pet coming into a new home should see a vet asap (especially before being allowed to interact with other pets) - just an FYI.

But runny stools could also be from switching food. Cats have sensitive stomachs, and if you're feeding Cricket different food than he was eating, this could be the problem. It takes them a while to get used to new food, and switching foods is always best done by mixing little bits of new food with the old food, and gradually increasing the amount of new food to old food.

Once again, thank you.

Yes, I'm a bad mommy! I'm usually very good about taking new pets to the vet right away. I don't have my license, though, and my mom doesn't live with me, and my dad works all day (6AM to 7PM+), and taxi cabs are a rare sight to see around here... He has an appointment this week, though.

Yes, it could be his food. I'm not sure what kind they were feeding him at the store... I guess I should have asked.

Thank you for the information!

Emily...you are not a bad mommy. Yes...kitten mills are terrible places but you just did not think clearly when you adopted your furbaby. I am glad that you are taking your kitten to the vet. Let us know what you find out. You & your furbaby will be in my prayers.

Thank you so much, Lei. I'm pretty worried about him. It was bad to buy a kitten instead of adopt, but I DO love my animals. I will be sure to update everyone. Hopefully it's nothing serious. *Crosses Fingers* Poor guy. Whatever he has, though, it doesn't seem to be bothering him very much. Thanks again!

Not every pet store sells kittens and puppies from mills- it depends on your location really- the Mid-West is the worst offenders-

I wish you luck with your baby-

Thank you. Hmmm, maybe I'll do a background check on the pet store I bought him from...

I posted pictures of my kitties in the forum where new people post!

Nope... no milk. Just kitten food and water and the occasional kitten treat.

Haha... I watched him go (gross, I know. Have to watch out for him, though!) and noticed that it was a bit more solid tonight. So, that's good... I hope.
