I adopted a cat when he was 10 years old to save him from euthanasia. He is now 16 and I still really don't know much about cat's behavior. I have a bed in the lower level of my home that my nephew slept on while he stayed with me. He has since moved. About 3 weeks ago the cat started going down their and sits in front of the bed and cries like a baby in distress. Then he jumps on the bed and goes to sleep. He was not particularly close to my nephew and only slept on the bed when it was empty. Otherwise he appears to be in good health. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. I have asked the veterinarian and he has no answer.

Perhaps he misses your nephew a little bit?
That's the only thing that I can think of......

Stashka2,

I agree with Tigger. It is possible that your kitty misses your nephew. And I believe the reason why he sleeps on the bed is because your nephew's scent may still be there. If he cries for a long time, I would go and lay with him. But that is only my opinion because that's what I'd do. Please keep us posted.

Good luck.

Sometimes my two cats start crying loudly through the night. They usually seem to just want to know where we all are, and if I talk to them and stroke them they'll settle down.

Thank You to all for giving me your info on my cat Squeaky who cries by the bed. I really feel much better now that I know what might be troubling him.

Does he cry before he jumps on anything else. My mother-in law's cat also would cry before jumping on things. For her it was an arthritis issue. She was in pain and knew jumping up would hurt. That may be the problem with your cat as it is an older cat.

Dear Ady:

He makes noises when he jumps on other things, but this is an entirely different sound. When he sits in front of the bed it is a loud whaling sound and actually sounds like a small baby crying. It is very hard to describe, but you can hear him all over the house. Thank you though for the input as now I know why he probably cries before jumping on other things.

As he is quite old, I would take him to see the vet. Cats can develop all sorts of geriatric problems, and the sooner those are diagnosed the better. If he is extremely agitated and misses your nephew you may want to try some rescue rememdy + lots of TLC!
