Ther is this old guy that cuts my grass, and honestly, he does a good job. The problem is, he comes waaay before it needs it again and acts like he won't come back if we don't let him do it. He came today and didn't even come to the door, just did the job. I really did not have the money to pay him, but I had to. I started not to pay him since I didn't approve the job, but he started taliking about how his wife had been in the hospital, and he was behind in his work, blah, blah, blah, so I paid him so he would go away. Now I have to find the money to pay a credit card bill that is scheduled to come out of my account on Monday, and still buy groceries tomorrow.
I wish the landlord would pave the yard! I hate grass!

Stand your ground and tell him.

I have a window cleaner who does most peoples in my street as well. He normally comes every 2 weeks, but quite honestly once a month is fine so i told him thats when i wanted mine done.

Yeah, maybe you can work out a "once a week" or "once every week and a half" schedule out with him. He's just gonna continue to take advantage of you if you don't. I went thru the same thing a few years ago. That's not a good way for him to do business and keep his customers happy!

Find someone else if you won't listen to you. Is it stipulated in your rental agreement that you, rather than your landlord have to pay for this service?

Really I would make the dates he comes so you can remind him you only want him to come. Tell him you can't afford to pay him!! Make him feel bad for once.

You're too nice but you must be firm. Either you stick to a schedule or find someone else who will do a good job and be there only when you want him to.

I agree with the others. You need to either make a specific schedule, or at least tell him that he will not be paid if you don't approve the job beforehand.

When I first bought my house, I was in a simliar situation. The previous owner had someone who did the lawn and was reasonable, so I agreed to keep up the service. Well, come to find out I never knew when he was coming, and he came much like your guy did. To add to the trouble, he was deaf and very difficult to communicate with. On the couple of occasions he attempted to write me some kind of note, I could see that he was barely even what you'd call literate. All of a sudden he stopped coming! After about a month, he came with a note that I made out to understand that he wasn't traveling to my area anymore.

I don't know how big your lawn is, but after that experience, I bought a $100 lawn mower and a $25 weed whacker, and I've done the damn thing myself ever since.
