A Tale of Four Kitties

My wife and I adopted our first cat in October 2000. Basia (BAH-sha) was known as "Tiny" at the local Humane Society shelter because she was such a little squeaky thing. She was the only survivor of a coyote attack that claimed her mother and littermates. She's a Van-pattern American Shorthair with grey ears and tail. For some reason, Basia took to me right away and has been Daddy's little girl ever since. She loves to walk around my shoulders and fall asleep on my chest.

No more that a week after bringing Basia home, we visited our vet and brought home a buddy for her. We had no idea what to name a male cat, but it was Election night 2000 and when President Bush was declared the winner, we decided on "Dubya"! He's a big orange and white tabby whose interests are in eating and laying claim to every new cat toy or piece of cat furniture that comes through the door.

In the fall of 2004 I nearly claimed a stray black kitten that had been wandering around my job site, but someone else took her home first. We had the bug for a new cat though, and when my wife and I saw a mobile Humane Society truck in a parking lot, we strolled through and came out with Jewel, a sweet white cat with one blue eye and one gold. She enjoys napping and playing with dangling feathers, but her obsession is any kind of running water.

We thought that three would be our limit, but over last Thanksgiving weekend my wife noticed a stray kitten hanging around outside, huddling under the cars against the freezing rain and wind. For the next three days we fed her and she kept coming back. We couldn't stand to see her out in the cold, so we caught her and brought her in. After a few days of quarantine in our bathroom and no indication that anyone in the neighborhood was looking for her, we made Tiger the latest addition to our family. She is a black and tan mackerel tabby and the sweetest and most gentle cat I've ever seen. She likes treats, flirting with Dubya, playing with Jewel and just looking cuddly to the rest of us.

Hi Captiva,

I hope to post pictures soon, but first I'll have to go through the hundreds of digitals we've taken over the years. Dubya is listed at the My Cat Hates You web site, looking uncharacteristically nasty!

Greetings to everyone who has replied!

I should clear up one thing though. I'm not the proprietor of the My Cat Hates You web site, I just submitted a picture of one of my cats and it was accepted there.
