In people, that is, not pets!

When I was seventeen I was taking Tae Kwon Do. In the middle of a tournament (I won a bronze medal, btw...okay, brag done
), when I went to do a side kick my hip popped out and then snapped back in. Needless to say, it hurt like a buggaboo for the next couple of days, but I didn't really think anything about it. Figured it was just a strain or something.

When I returned to classes, however, any time I would try and kick, it would happen again. It got to the point I had to quit classes because my hips hurt whenever I went. I didn't have medical insurance at the time so I never went to the doctors.

I found out some months later when I was rifling through some old paperwork in my mother's trunk, that I found some old medical records of mine from when I was a baby. I had been a month late being born (which I knew) and because of it there had been complications. For one, my head was solid and I no longer had a sufficiant 'soft spot' for it to collapse for the birth canal. For another, apparently (and this I didn't know) my position in the womb put pressure on my hips and caused me to be born with them dislocated. The doctors put them back in and then told my parents to triple diaper me for the next few months, and that was it.

My mother had totally forgotten about it. I never had problems walking or anything until after the 'incident' at the tournament, but I have no doubt that the reason my hip came out then was because of problems stemming from the condition I had when born.

I'm now nearly thirty and my problems are getting worse. I can't cross my legs because I can feel my hip pulling out. Before, I could walk eight to ten hours straight before I started to feel pain in them. Now two or three hours, if that, will cause them to ache. Some days while walking I can feel my hip clicking in and out, and its seriously starting to get annoying.

I have an appointment to discuss this with my doc, but does anyone have any experience in this? Realisitcally, is there anything that can be done? My mother suffers from severe arthritis and I'm worried that's what I'm developing. I would also love to resume Tae Kwon Do again but I can't so long as I'm unable to kick. Also, shouldn't more have been done than just layering diapers when I was younger? I've heard that layering diapers was a questionable practice and that most doctors used a type of sling instead. I hate the idea of being faced with arthritis or surgery because some dink military doctor decided to be lazy.

Any ideas?

Three years ago I was in a horrible car accident that fractured my pelvis on both sides. The doctor in the emergency room insisted that I try to walk out of the hospital the morning after. Well, I couldnt, I could feel the bones rubbing together and everything. Ever since then, I always have this swollen look in my hip area, and have pain a lot of times so I know what you are going through. I was under the impression that a sling wouldn't help with keeping th bones where they needed to be. And with yours being dislocated at such a young age, I am certain the ligaments were not only damaged, but destroyed as years went by. I can't believe that your doctor didnt recommend regularly checking that. The only thing that I think they would do, is a hip joint replacement if its that bad, but I am not sure. have you tried the heat therapy patches for during the day to see if they help ease some of your discomfort? Try hot baths at night as well, in addition to heating pads. Let me know what happens. If I were you, I would insist that the doctor see me sooner as opposed to later, just to be safe.

I don't think its bad enough for a hip replacement. Especially after seeing all the pain my mother went through for her knee replacement (and a hip replacement is worse). But its definately an ongoing discomfort and its driving me totally nuts!

I called to make an appointment with my doc today but she's on vacation for a week, so I have to wait, alas.
