My cat is still feeding her kittens. We keep her indoors but she escaped yesterday (back now). Is it possible for her to get pregnant while she is feeding the kittens.

Also, the kittens are nearly 8 weeks old. Should she have stopped feeding them by now?

Yes, it is entirely possible for her to get pregnant again! You must be VERY vigilant not to let her escape again or you will end up with even more kittens!

Kittens will continue to nurse as long as Mom lets them. It may be that you will start to see the time she lies down for them decrease - she might lay down and nurse for very short bursts and then stop completely. Are you feeding the kittens regular food as well?

With the kittens at 8 weeks old now, it is time to get the Mom cat spayed. She should be kept indoors at all times until you can get that done or like I said, you will end up with more kittens.

I wouldn't want to risk her health in such a quick pregnancy. Call your vet and schedule her spay appointment within a week or two so she won't have another litter. It is just too hard for them to have litters so close together, and if she was out, I would say she is high risk!

Congrats on your babies.

I had an outside cat once... got pregnant, had kittens, week after giving birth... pregnant again! That happened a few times before we finally decided it was too much and brought her to a shelter. Dont' risk it... she get pregnant again real soon.

yes, they are eating normal kitten food. My vet said she wouldn't spay her until a week after the kittens were weaned. My cat gets distressed if she is separated from the kittens... calling out for them. Why do I have to seperate them? won't she wean them in her own good time?

If they are eating normal kitten food as the main part of their diet, then they ARE weaned. Just because they are still being allowed to nurse doesn't mean that they have to nurse in order to receive nutrition. If kitten food makes up the majority of their nutritional needs, then call the vet back and tell him to schedule the spay.

Mom cats I have known have allowed the babies to continue to nurse well into their fourth and even sixth month ... so, in answer to your question, no, the possibility exists that Mom won't just wean them in her own good time.
