In light of the good news thread in IMO, I thought I'd share someone positive today that just really lifted my spirits. An older couple was sat at one of my tables this afternoon and they had recognized me from the previous week. I had waited on their party of 16. The gentleman felt that the gratuity tip was not quite enough and he pulled out his wallet and gave me an additional $2 tip. Granted, $2 isn't a huge sum of money, but the thoughtfulness of this gesture just really made my day

I had another table today that was probably the meanest table I've ever had in the entire history of my serving- but by the end of the meal they apologized for their rudeness and left me a pretty big tip- that also made my day!

Yay for nice people, or people who you think aren't nice but end up being nice anyway!!

There are still some good folk to be found in this great country of ours...

They just don't tend to stand out like the rude ones do...

Glad to hear you found a few of the better ones today

I've always thought that waitressing is a really tough job. The demanding people, the low pay, the work, the strain on the shoulders and the back and being on your feet all the time. We always try to tip high for service. Only a few times have we had such lousy service we didn't want to tip at all- (but we still did).

WellingtonCats, I used to wait on these two gentlemen from Europe all the time and they told me that most everywhere else in the world the gratuity is either added automatically, or that the servers are paid a real wage, not just $2.13 an hour. They usually just asked to have a gratuity automatically added. I believe they were Swiss. There are several young Italian men that come in every once in a while and say the same thing. They just expect that the tip is already included, or that the servers are paid a decent wage

I'm moving to New Zealand!

It would be nicer to make an actual hourly wage. I know that there are some cities in the US with different minimum wage requirments for servers- meaning they actually get paid. In my state we only make $2.13 an hour. I can't imagine doing this forever, but it is a lot of fun right now. The average gratuity here is 15-18% and I average about $10 an hour, excluding the $2.13- but you never really know how much you will make and it's very difficult to budget. It would be nice to work at a place where I had a set hourly wage and tipping wasn't necessary.

I waitressed for years, it was tiring and in the end made me cranky. It was so hard to never know how much money I was going to take home. Servers definitely deserve more than such a puny hourly. It's another area where we could improve here in the US!

That couple sounds absolutely lovely
. I suspect one or both of them probably worked in food service at one point or another and appreciate how difficult your job is! Thanks for sharing a nice story with us
