Hello all, I've got a problem and was originally going to post it in S.O.S but now I think there may be a new twist to this problem. I had new neighbors move in next door about 6 months ago. They seem like a very nice young couple, they have 2 cats. There male cat started showing up at my house this winter crying, cold and hungry (I have 4 cats and 2 dogs of my own). I didn't know at the time it was their cat. After several conversations with them I found out that they also had a female cat. They said the male cat (who is neutered) just liked to sneak out. I began to feed him every morning because it seemed like they never let him in. I was gone on vacation for a week and when I came back I found out they had been gone too. Their male cat had been out all week and was noticably thinner and they didn't seem to think to much of it. After that I started to let him in my house, I don't think they even notice he's even not around as much. About 6 weeks ago, I began to notice that their other cat, the female was outside all the time (she'd been inside before). I'd see her all the time, hanging around my house, but she was extremely shy and I could never get to close. I stared leaving my garage door ajar and put food in there, so a least if they weren't feeding her she'd have food. Over the last few weeks I have really won her trust and she allows me to pick here up and pet her. I noticed tonight that she was getting a tummy on her, but then I noticed her nipples were larger then normal. I don't know if she is spayed, but I'm wondering if she may be pregnant? I certainly don't want her to be outside all the time if she's pregnant (they do not let her in at all now). She is always hanging out in my yard or garage. I don't want to cause problems with my neighbors, but. . . . well I don't know what to do? How do I tell if she's pregnant or not. Sorry this is such a long post, I'd love to here any advise anyone has.

Although there are certain things that could indicate she is pregnant...without taking her to a vet or feeling kittens...you won't know for sure. We've had cats in our rescue who we swore were pregnant...but weren't (some were just large..others had a bad case of worms). I would first politely ask the neighbors if she has been spayed. Explain that you have noticed some weight gain and are concerned for her health. If she has not been spayed...I would offer to take her to the vet. The vet will be able to tell you whether she is pregnant and how far along she is.

Thought I'd add to my original post. I took the cat into the vets and she is pregnant. I have been keeping her in my house because someone needs to take care of her. She is getting bigger by the day! I still can't beleive they let her out and she wasn't spayed, are some people that stupid!
I'm going to let her have the kittens and then will get her spayed. I'm new at this so I'm not sure what to expect as far as the rest of her pregnancy, labor and delivery. I estimate she has about three weeks left.

Bad job on their part - good job on your part though! Is she now your kitty I hope?

I will probably keep her or find her a better home then the one she had. I noticed today when I went home at lunch, I think she may have worms (looked like Tape worms). Is it safe to worm a pregnant cat? Can I do it over the counter or should I call the vets?

Can you phone the vet you took her to and ask - that would be the safest thing to do. I certainly wouldn't use any OTC stuff on her.

Right now I am fostering a little pregnant girl a co-worker and I took from her neighbor. This little cat is only one and a half and this is about her 5th litter. My friend tried to get the neighbor to get her spayed but the lady never did. So we just took her. I refused to just pay to spay this woman's cat, I said if we took her she is going to get a better home than the one she had. She is registered with the no-kill shelter I volunteer at, and she will go there with the kittens eventually. People are thoughtless, it makes me mad, especially the ones who say they love kittens, and just want them around. At the shelter we get BOXES and BOXES of kittens that no one wants. If they really loved them, they would foster a litter instead of creating more.

I agree with everything you said Ginava
I was so sick of seeing the neighbors cats outside, not being fed, needing attention, I finally just took them. After I get her spayed I doubt I will be giving her back. They don't seem to care anyways. She is a very young cat (probably 8 to 9 month old) I hope she doesn't have any problems with having her kittens.
