Does anyone have any of these cats? I am looking to adopt a Mau Mix. I did an extensive search yesterday on the net and found them to range from 500.00 to 700.00 a piece. They are too expensive for me to purchase but this one I'm hoping to rescue and give a good home to. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how different they are from your every day short haired cats that I already own. I'd like to know if she'll blend well or if there is anything I should know before goin on this adventure. Thanks!

Hi Smarie,

I don't think you will an Egyptian Mau cross, because they are such a rare breed. Perhaps you could try contacting breeders near you and perhaps they have Ex breeding cats available for good homes. It's worth a try.

They are definitly one of my favourite breeds,
Sam.

I would agree with Sam. The likelihood of finding a "mix" Egyptian Mau is unlikely to nil. I would also suggest contacting a breeder near you for a retired breeding/show cat.

I don't know much about Mau's, but I do own a Bengal, which I'm assuming is somewhat similar, at least in looks they're similar. However, I don't think Mau's have wild blood in them, like the Bengal does. I can tell you that with my Bengal, asside from being a little more active than my other cats, is still a regular cat. He gets along fine with the other cats.

One other website to keep checking is http://www.purebredcatrescue.org/pur...me/default.asp

They mostly have Himalayan and Persian, but right now thet also have a Bobtail Mix and a Devon Rex. It also says that they will have some Bengals, Balinese and Exotic Shorthairs shortly.

It is a rescue so the prices for adoption range from $75-$225. And the site says: Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, feline leukemia/FIV testing, distemper vaccination, microchipping, deworming, flea-free, grooming, temperament testing and often full dental cleanings. Older cats have had blood panels to assure health.

I have heard great things about this rescue from other sites.

I actually have a couple mau mixes. They're wonderful...very loving and caring...and protective of each other & their humans! I have a 5yr old, and they are wonderful with her...they don't mind when she plays just a bit too rough with them...they take it all in stride. I think you would love them. They're very personable and sweet.

I'm sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but I know lots on Maus and can't help but comment.

Maus and nothing like Bengals other than the spots. They did use Maus to create Bengals, but the other half is an asian leopard cat (wild) so they are very unique. They have completely different personalities and Bengals are much more common now.

If you haven't found a cat yet, then I know just the perfect place for you. There is an Egyptian Mau cat rescue in Egypt that charges $100-200 for cats/kittens (which only covers their medical care), they just sent a kitten to America, so they can give you a shipping quote as well.

Another word that I hope isn't too far off topic. The Maus seem expensive, but that's only because they come already spayed/neuetered, shots, dewormings, etc (which easily runs $200-400 per cat depending on where you live), then when you factor in food and the breeders time invested and on and on, and then considering the care of the adult cats (and the ungodly costs of showing) they don't make any money - and if they do it's actual pennies on the hour.

Also consider: $600 for a new family member that will live 15 years, that's only $40 a year on your end for a kitty that's been health screened, with a health guarantee, and taken extremely good care of. Be careful, because a lot of times a good deal on a purebred turns into a sick cat.

End lecture (sorry).

I got my Egyptian Mau Riley for under $500 with shipping. He was the last one of the litter to go because he had a scratch on his nose that he was born with. I think the breeder just gave up on placing him because when I called she said she didn't have any kittens. Then when I asked about "older" kittens she mentioned him. His scratch fell off two weeks later and you can't even tell it was there.

A lot of times you can ask breeders to take your name and number down and keep you in mind if they have a less than perfect kitten. They are usually a lot less expensive and have the same great personalities as their litter mates.
