OK, here's the scoop; I have a persian, a half-persian, and two domestic shorthair cats, plus four shorthair kittens. What sort of brushes/combs etc. do I need to buy that would benefit both longhair and shorthair cats? We have some cat brushes, but I don't think its what I need grooming-wise, especially for the persian. Thanks for the advice!

The Zoom Groom for cats is really nice. I think you could use that for both. I use it for all my cats. It loosens hair and it it is also gentle. I have one short haired cat and 2 very thick haired medium/sort of long haired cats. I do use a very fine metal comb for my longer haired cats as I think it gets the loose hair better but I use that mainly for Lewis because he likes to be brushed and combed and I can take my time with the comb. It works well because I can get down next to the skin better which is where Lewis matts. I'm finding at 9 months he's really prone to matting as he has very thick, soft wavey hair at the base. He loves to be brushed and will roll over and raise his legs/arms up so I can get under them. It's so cute.
I use one of those slicker brushesfor Wallace because he's more of a wiggle butt about being brushed and it really does pick up the hair. Although he has thick fluffy hair, he's not as prone to matting. I have no idea if these are the tools you're supposed to use but they work well for my cats.

How funny!...I just purchased the "zoom groom" yesterday. I have heard so many good things about it and actually purchased the last one in the store. I have 2 Persians and 2 short-hair (still kittens). I have tried metal combs, brushes, etc. on the Persians but they never seem too thrilled. They LOVE the Zoom Groom. I couldn't believe what I was seeing...they just lay there and let me groom them. For such a silly looking thing...it's a rubber-looking cat shape...it really does the job.

My kids don't like the zoom groom
But from what I've heard most do like it. I think my cats are just strange.
Besides a brush, I would recommend a comb to keep the problem areas from matting. Especially in the longer haired kitties.

Thanks! Any specific brands you find the best?

No specific brands. But one medium tooth and one fine tooth is a good idea. I have to use a fine tooth on their legs and face. You can also use a baby comb if you have one. Oh! And I use a dry, clean toothbrush sometimes, on their faces. Sorry it took me a few days to respond. Busy time of year!
