We're planning a 4th of July bash including karaoke. I'm collecting karaoke songs for the event. I have about 75 so far, of various genres, but unless you have a huge selection it's hard to accommodate everyone. My question is, when you go karaoke-ing, what kind of songs do you look for first?

Post your favorite song to karaoke (or what you would do if you've never gone) so I can add it to my list

Throw in Patsy Cline's "Crazy" or that horrible "Achy Breaky Heart" song for when your real good and drunk. Select songs for each other to sing instead of choosing your own.

I think any of the 80's songs would be awesome. Those would be the ones I'd choose because I know the words to those songs by heart.

I've never sang karaoke, but I've been to a few bars that had it. It seems to me that the most fun ones to do at a party would be the ones where everybody knows some or all of the words and can join in. I remember one bar used to play Crocadile Rock and the place would go nuts. Margaritaville is another good sing-along song that comes to mind.

I didn't think of Patsy or Gloria Gaynor... good suggestions! One step ahead of ya on Margaritaville ;-)

Well, our event could be as few as 15 (if it flops) or greater than 100 people (if a complete smash hit)... the event committee for our neighborhood is putting it on, obviously inviting the entire neighborhood. We'll be running karaoke for about 2 hours, but we'll be keeping the lyric book & CD's for future events.

I've collected a handful of Nat King Cole, 80's, Elvis, Beatles, Country, and various stuff right up to Kelly Clarkson, but dagnab it I've only got 75 selections. It's easiest to look for specific songs than search by genre though, especially since I'm looking for obviously well known stuff. Running out of ideas! You'd think I have plenty of time, but it won't be easy compiling a one-song-per-page lyric book with over 100 songs
What have I volunteered myself for??!!!

Love shack by the B-52's....
Gloria - Laura Branigan....

I've never done Karaoke but I have seen these songs get butchered by everyone at Christmas parties!

Hey that's a great list, thanks! I wonder which are the most popular... I tried to find a "most popular" list online to no avail.

Thanks everybody! I Will Survive, Crocodile Rock, Love Shack, and Crazy are now part of my list! Haven't found Gloria yet...

Keep 'em coming!

I grabbed some Britney, but I just can't stomach My Heart Will Go On anymore... LMAO!!! I love Leo, love the movie, but that song makes me puke with how many times it got played back then!

Joan Jett... hey that is a good one. I didn't quite place the lyric until I got the name.

Movin' on up!
My personal karaoke repertoire includes:

These Boots Are Made for Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra

The Lady is a Tramp - Frank Sinatra

Slow Hand - the Pointer Sisters

My Boyfriend's Back - the Angels

Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin

Personality - Lloyd Price

My ex and I always duetted "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher (I STILL can't listen to that song.)

When we Tombstone Shady Ladies got a few drinks into us, we'd belt Jimmy Buffett's "Why Don't We Get Drunk ans S****".

Yeah, that would be a good one.
That's my favorite song to sing for karaoke!!! Pat Benatar's Love is a Battlefield is a good one too! Skip American Pie though. It's ten minutes of tone deafness with the wrong person singing it, lol.

I used to work in a sports bar that had karaoke on Thursdays. Here are some songs that were popular there:

I Will Survive
Hotel California
Friends in Low Places
Let's Stay Together
We Are Family
Me and Mrs Jones

FAAABBBULOUS Suggestions! They'll help round out the selections... there are a lot of balads in my list, so any upbeat songs are welcomed!

I need about 15 more... I'm up to 85 thanks to you guys! Any more ideas?
