A question of rape

Thread Starter
In today's Times there is a story from South Africa (where rape is apparently a common crime). A woman has invented a device which is worn like a tampon. If the wearer is raped, the device clamps on to the rapists' penis, and cannot be removed without medical assistance. Anti-rape campaigners hate this device, they say that it is encouraging women to adapt to the threat of rape, and that it also shows that society is in danger of accepting rape as a reality of everyday life.

What do you think about this?

It is awful that things are that bad, but, whatever works. If anti-rape campaigners don't like it, they should do something constructive to fix the problem. Honestly, though, I don't know what that would be.

I guess I'm what you'd consider an "anti-rape activist" because I advocate for rape survivors in my job....and honestly, if rape is that common in South Africa (which I've heard horrible stories to support that), then I think women should do whatever it takes to protect themselves. There's nothing wrong with being extra-careful if the threat is that real.
I can see the dangers in masses giving in to hysteria, but the horrible violence against women in Africa is very real, so I think this measure is justified.

i wish they had them here, be great for peace of mind. couldnt the rapist take it out or make her take it out? wouldnt he notice?

Whilst it seems a good idea it might not really be a good idea for the victim. They will have to stay with that person until they are found ie: for the device to be removed. Surely that in itself will cause some added trauma to the initial rape?

I am upset that things have got that bad, but also can't believe it takes some kind of barbaric device like this to try and stop rape

So that means the man would be attached to her the whole time, for God knows how long, and he could strangle her to death in anger over his penis being clamped!!! GOOD LORD! I don't see that working!!!

Instead of spending money on penis clampers, can't they spend money on teaching women SELF DEFENSE? How to kick the cr@p out of these guys when they feel angry & feel like taking a woman's body?

And if rape is that common of a crime -- why not harsher punishment for the rapists? Such as removing their penises???

OK, maybe I misunderstood something. Does the device stay IN her while it's clamped to the rapist? Or does it come out of her and just stay on him? Also, the more I think about it, the more I think it probably is more dangerous for the woman....it's liable to up the lethality factor involved in the rape.

ummm and rape isn't horrible and disgusting? i think men who rape need help and while i think this invention is not really a good idea i do think that if any man gets caught by it then he deserves everything he gets because he shouldn't be putting things where they don't belong in the first place

No, the rapist isn't attached to the victim. The device attaches to the rapist.
The rapist has to go to the Dr. to have it removed.

Well then whatever they have to do to protect themselves from this.

Yeah, we need help, 'cause a lot of times its hard to hold her down by yourself ! !

That wasn't a bit funny, but I HAD to say it.

For the record, I have no sympathy or mercy on any man that hurts any woman.

This device seem to be to do more harm than good. First of all, it doesn't
prevent the rape. Second of all, seems the rapist could get angry at the victim after finding that device on his penis, and hurt the victim. And third of all, seems that using this device could increase chanses of STD transmission. So, I say-stupid idea all the way around.

The risks definately outweigh the benefits.

Except in one theory...anytime a male has to have one removed, he can be arrested and charged with rape.

Shame there isn't a better method of fighting back available to the people in that country....Rape is a horrible crime.
