so in the past month or so kirby has had intermitent mucus and occassional blood in his stool. we called the vet my wife's family uses (the vet i used to visit left her original hospital). they didn't think he needed to come in for tests yet, but gave her some IVD Neutral Formula food to try. i found out where my old vet moved to and called to get her opinion yesterday. she would have recommeneded one of the hypoallergenic formulas, but said the Neutral is probably still not a bad place to start to see if the problem is a food allergy. but, i wasn't too impressed with the ingredient list of the IVD, nor do i want to become hooked on vet priced food if not necessary.

the primary food i fed kirby was nutro natural choice complete care, then the indoor version when it came out, as well as royal canin indoor at times.

i'm wondering if something like Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul might be worth trying, as it has no corn products, and seems to have a fairly neutral blend of ingredients, though the dried skim milk has me a little worried...??

any other thoughts?

thanks,
phil

he's about 5 1/2. the next time there is blood, i plan to bag it and bring it to my old vet, who i've now relocated, for a test.

by richer, do you mean the combination of protein and fat %?

hmm, will look into the natural balance venison and green pea. does that mean no more canned/pouch food, or are there allergy versions of those too? do the allergies tend to be to the carbohydrates in the dry food, or could be to anything?

edit: i found natural balance makes an allergy venison and pea canned food now: Venison and Green Pea Canned

no by richer look at the amount of meat and grains... I believe four meats and sevan grains ... I aim for one to one in cat food or one to one or two in dog.. My dog is very sensitive she eats nutro natural choice senior mixed with Natural balances venison and brown rice ... I am thrilled to se a cat can without any wheat or corn or loads of rice... Pat has said wynsong makes an all meat can ....

Has your vet tested for parasites, including coccidia? That was what caused Ellie to have blood and mucus in her stool and it has completely gone now.
